Bias Ply Tires

Anyone running Swampers or other bias-ply tires on their series? I am looking at several options for my Series IIA. Off-road performance is my number one interest with the truck, but I do not want to have to trailer it for longer trips. Anyone have experience driving relatively long highway distances ( say 6-8 hours) on bias plies? I keep reading that you have to be very careful of air pressures. What are the risks driving them on the highway? Obviously noise and comfort are not big concerns to me or I wouldn't have a Landy. But safety is important. Any input would be appreciated.

cheers,

Ted

I used to run a bias ply tire. They wore out and I went with a radial tire (DD/trail rig so it was more practical). When I had them, they were great. Mainly on rocks they provided extra grip that my radials don't. But like I said, its a daily driver and I was tired of em flat-spotting every morning. Since I was poor, bias ply was all I had so I drove on em everywhere. I did a ton of 5 hour trips and a couple o' 7 hours. Once did an entire weekend of wheelin' and then long highway driving. Aside from them being EXTREMELY loud, no problems. They don't exactly ride well nor are exactly round (over time). I went through a set in 2 years but like I said, DD and then expedition-type driving so I think they did fairly well.

Obviously, you are looking for uber-performance and the Super Swamper TSL SX is a BEAST. Mount em on some beadlocks, run 4 psi and you got it made. The SX has a heavier sidewall and extra lugs on the side for more grip. Only downside is that they are $$$ and the tire is physically heavy. Remember that when its time to change a tire or question the strength of your drivetrain. This is one extreme.

Another tire to consider is the Super Swamper LTB simply because they are cheap. I've seen em perform and they are good. Seems like the skinnier tires work best on the rovers and the LTBs are in a comparible size. I know a couple of people who drive all over the place on them. All of them complain about the on-road performance but no discouraging words off road. On a budget, I'd recommend these tires.

If you aren't gonna DD it, and if you drive 6 hours round-trip out somewhere once a month, then a bias ply will be fine. But if you are highway driving anymore than that, then the radials REALLY start to look nice. Like I said before, beadlocks will help out because then you can air WAY down and with a radial, this supply so much traction.

Series Rovers came from the factory with bias ply tires. I drove for years with bais ply. I wouldn't have any concerns with them. But good bias ply are about the same price as radials.
