Hi All:

'99 D1
My a/c has been giving me trouble. It stopped cooling two weeks ago.

Turns out, the 30 amp fuse in the engine compartment was blown. I replaced it and it blew again, immediately. I replaced the compressor, and we had to use a jumper wire instead of the fuse to start the compressor in order to charge the system. We put in oil and Freon (134a). Put in a new fuse and all was fine for about two weeks. In fact, it was colder than it was when it was new.

A few days ago, it stopped cooling again. Fuse was blown.

Today, I went to check the pressure, and knowing the fuse would just blow, I jumpered it again. Started up the engine, turned on the a/c, and went to see the pressure meter on the LOW side of the a/c.

30 seconds in, wiring catches fire. I shut down, and have traced the burnt wires. They both go to the condenser fans after they are pigtailed to two leads each, and then on to the fans. One is black, one is black and brown. One comes from a plug in the pass. side kick panel, the other I haven't traced back all the way yet.

Since I cannot run anything now (the entire contents of the right side of the engine compartment have been removed to trace the wiring), should I be able to test the fans by hooking them up directly to the battery? Should they kick on when I do that? I ask because I tried that and neither of them did kick on.

Any advice on how to diagnose the original problem will be ppreciated. I am totally new at a/c stuff.

Thanks!

One of your cooling fans has a direct short in it I suspect. Black wire goes to ground. The other goes to relay k109 which is up under the glove box on a swing down bracket.
