Bigger than 265/75/16 on RTE 2" on D2?

I'll be replacing my 265/75/16 tires in the next few months, probably moving from BFG MT to AT. Question is, can I get just a little bigger tire since the RTE 2" is more like 3" actual lift? Sorry if I missed this on a search, but I couldn't find this specific question.

But the 255/85/16 is only available in the BFG "MT" and he said he wanted to go with an AT (I personally think that it sucks that the 255/85/16 isn't offered in other tire styles or by other tire manufacturers)

BFG 255/85-16 do not "fit fine".

They will physically fit inside the wheelwell, however, this is far from "fitting fine".

They will rub severely on articulation and for a proper job will require uprated axles, re-gearing, and a good plan for broken front CV's .

I saw one fitted with 255/85-16 with 3" springs from another maker and it fit- but just barely. RTE 2" springs really lift at least 3" so it might work. When stuffing the rear, it was too close for my taste- but it did fit.

A guy in my club has 285's with his Safari Gard Stage II lift and it rubs in articulation. I would personally stick with 32's on a 2 inch. Like I've said before and heard before...32" and 2" are the magic numbers with these Discos.

While I can't speak for the rubbing on 2" lift, I have to disagree w/ the axles, re-gearing & broken CV's. I doubt that a DII has been wheeled much harder than mine. I run 285's and have yet to break an axle or front CV. I could probably stand some gears, but hasn't been that big a deal. Moving from CO to VA feels like I put a turbo in there... I'm about to go up a tire size,,which may well put me into the drive-train danger zone,,, but 255/85's should not cause broken axles or CVs on a DII.

I suppose it comes down to what you are comfortable with. DI's, Defenders, and DII's break CV's on stock tires (29" on Discoverys and 32" on Defenders), this is a known fact.
Frank Rafka (Mongo), and many others even here on this board can attest to the weakness of the CV's, again, this is a know problem.

A 255/85-16 BFG MT KM is around 33 3/4" tall, for me that is pushing stock components way beyond the safety margin that i am comfortable with, especially out in the woods where i like to avoid failure at all cost.

A 265/75-16 performs adequately and does not seem to burden these trucks nearly as much as the 255/85. This tire size, for me, would qualify for Kevin's "fits fine" category.

Now, the gearing issue. Sure the truck will still move forward and drive down the road without re-gearing but it will lose a substantial amount of acceleration and will labor hard on-road up any hills. Off-road, low range will suffer and first gear low will not provide the same low speed control that was present with the smaller diameter tire. Compression braking will also suffer. For me, these factors are not acceptable and require attention.

Again, all of this comes down to what one is willing to tolerate and is comfortable with.

Kevin, I don't comment based on "my friends" experiences, I comment based on my own. Put some 255/85-16 BFG MT's on your Discovery then write back.

He asked if it FIT, not about gearing, breakage etc. I agree they start to give up some things in other areas. Doesn't sound like you have put them on your truck either Mr. Soapbox.

what breakage has he encountered? do you think he would of broke at the same spot with 265s?
