Bike Rack Suggestion for '04 Disco?

You can use a "Yak - Beddy Jo" in the rear cargo area with the seats folded down. This way you could keep it locked up while parked. It comes in handy if you ride after work and have to leave your bike in the Rover while at work. You can also leave it in there for days at a time.

If you have kids that would normally use the rear seats just strap them to the roof. (your bike always comes first).

Just bought the BVG swing away for two bikes only 5 days ago... and coincidently 3 days ago... found myself needing the swing away to access the spare and swap out a flat!

Plenty of clearance on my D2.

Bought locally from here for $299.95 http://www.racknroad.com/bike-racks.html

I did not see my two bike (XR 2" 2BK) part# 8000-0118 on-line. They said it is their store brand for what is sold by the Land Rover dealer

Also, you could add a two bike extension tube should your needs change.

Not sure anything else is a waste. Mine's maybe not super simple to install, but it's not rocket science and I like it a lot. I use it a couple of times a week and it's very handy. I welded a piece of 2x2 to the front bumber, drilled some holes, and attached the upper swing arm of my Thule rear hitch rack to it. It swings up when in use and holds up to 4 bikes. It keeps full access to the rear door without the bother of a swingarm when bikes are loaded. There's no issue with obscured view while driving. Here's a pic with a side view, it's the only one I could find at the moment. Maybe a little different, but it works great ...

Not sure which one it is but the one's on the Mobil Drive Around the World Disco's looked like they worked well - it holds the bikes up further (mounted on the spare tire) and at an angle....

I don't like this option, the rear hinges and the carrier is loaded enough already. In fact one of the episodes show one of their DIIs' spare tire carrier broke off completely along with the spare and the bikes  . I don't know how they didn't hear that happen.

Wheeling and carrying bikes at the same time seems like a reasonable expectation, so departure angle does matter. I went with the Thule Spare-me and the latch is already feeling the strain. I also don't trust the spare tire carrier to hold up. I've already had one start failing and that is w/o the bikes. My plan is to weld a swing out to the bumper for the spare tire carrier/jerry can and continue to use the spare me.

On the spare me there is much less chance of someone crunching the bike or rack in tight parking too.

I'm using this on the LR3 now though which makes more sense because my tire carrier swings away and is plenty strong for the bikes too. It all swings away as one package which is nice and of course puts no load on the door.

As above, the previous generation thule swing just cleared the spare (right against it really) and also just fit with both it and the door swung open. But then the departure angle was limited.

Yeah - that seems odd that situational awareness would prevent you from seeing that - maybe all the bolts broke at the same time :smilelol:

It's the same as any spare tire mounted option, just carries the bike up a bit more for clearance if you mount the bike via the downtube versus the top tube.

Personally I've got the yak tray on my SD rack - it works great for me and I can still fit my canoe, etc up there with no issues.
