Check out the "Line Lock" from Dynaflex. They have a site on the net somewhere....It locks on the last 5 rolls to the drum. The only way to remove the rope is to cut off the line lock. It's something like 10 bucks

thanks for the info! not sure if line lock works with wire rope though? do you? anyway maybe time to up grade to synthetic. but one more question with synthetic can you spool more rope on the drum then with wire? can synthetic run through a snatch block?

You don't say what kind of winch, or the attaching method. Different winches have different ways of attaching the rope.

Oh, I did not catch that you had wire....I don't think the Line Lock will work then, but not 100% on that. Depending on what winch and what size wire you have now depends on weather or not you can fit a longer rope to your set-up. It's probably not a bad idea to switch to rope when you need new line, or if you have some extra cash just burning a hole in your pocket. IMO, Dynaflex is the way to go.

the wire rope goes through a hole in the drum and a bracket holds the wire against the side of the drum. a single bolt holds it in place. anyway its a ramsey winch 8000lb er and the wire is the size that came with it when i bought it. anyway i think ill upgrade to the synthetic line . thanks again
