Just curious, but does anyone on Dweb get into this? Do you know that BMX is an Olympic sport in 2008?

My 7yo is an expert and racing in the Grand Nationals this weekend in Tulsa, OK. This sport is quite a rush.

The kid has two BIG plaques so far with one BIG trophy to follow.

And they call me a proud dad....

Anyone race class, cruiser, or opens? Or am I in the dark here?

GL with the kid's racing. Very cool.

I raced when I was 12 or so until age 17. I am 38 now so that was some time ago.

I would say its a great sport to get into. Requires fitness and I think I spent every moment wrenching on my bike to get it 'tweaked'. And every spare dollar buying something to upgrade. Made me get a job (paper route) early so I could make money for mods (Redline cranks were da bomb) and also started mowing lawns in the hood for extra money.

I think we took our bikes apart about 3-4 times per week to clean and repair. Also built a 1/4 pipe from scratch which helped with my future wood-working skills.

I used to be into that when i was around 12. I started in mountain biking then switched interest into BMX then when back to Mt biking but more of the freeride side of it. I could never find a good place to BMX around my area though so it was always kind of tougher. I liked it alot though it was awesome.

I used to race bmx up until i was 10 or so now I race and run a Semi-Pro/JRX DH and MX MTB race team. Best part about it is once you have a solid race resume and decide that you want to travel the national series in your DiscoII its quite easy to pick up vehicle sponsors :D

Funny thing this thread. I used to race when I was younger and tried to keep riding until a few years ago. Coincidentally I was getting ready to sell my BMX bike - anyone interested? It is a SUNN Royal Christophe Leveque signature frame, Columbus tubing - never raced. Here are some photos:

I figure I'd rather have it go to someone who knows their stuff and is a Rover person too!

Ahhhh, the good old days. :)

Thanks for chiming in guys. I used to race as a kid also, but never really gave it a thought until a couple of years ago when my son ran across some old trophies. He asked to go race. I figured we would hit a local race from time to time. LOL. Now we seem to be spending all of our time travelling the US chasing points and titles.

Now we have another problem: My daughter took off her training wheels at three years old and has started racing. My other son at two is now chomping at the bit as well

I can say that it is a great family sport to be involved in so if any of you have kids who like to ride bikes go get hooked up at www.ababmx.com or www.nbl.org

Oh man! I am not quite up there in years with you, old man :D , but I remember when I wanted nothing more on earth than GT 3pc. cranks (or the powerlite counterparts)! Those cranks were looked upon as magical items from beyond in our neighborhood. We all thought we would be faster and lighter than anyone if we just had those cranks! Stupid friggin kids!

Just watch out and make sure that your kids dont get bitten by the MTB bug, or else they'll be begging you for $4000 4X bikes and $6500 DH rigs, unless they are good enough to get free ones :D

My family was there this weekend! I have a 7inter that just missed his semi. My 8 girl took 6th, my 12 girl took 6th and my 5novice won! We were the family with 7 kids racing.

My oldest sons (17 inter and 16 ex) have a 96 XD Eco-Challege Disco. I drive a 95!

We have loved the time spent in BMX. Did your son make his MAIN? The trophies were HUGE!

LOL - well, dad (me) used to do some road and MTB racing so we have a 'quiver' of bikes. I think we have about twelve at last count.

And I hate to say it, but between his two bikes he is at about $4500

But that is just pennies compared to what we will likely drop this next year as he chases his first national Top Ten plate (NAG). Its like a giant sucking sound I hear coming from the wallet, but it sure is fun.

That rocks! How did you manage to get all of those trophies home? Especially the 5yo's? The first place ones were seven feet tall!

Unfortunately, mine did not make the Grands main. He has a really tough rack and he just turned seven to boot. Frankly I did not expect him to win, but we were pretty confident he would make his mains. The sad part is that no one in his rack even made it into the mains. They had 35 in the 7X class! He JUST turned seven though and only turned Expert in April so it is quite a jump for him.

During the Race of Champions he did get to race 6X and he got a fourth in class and a seventh in open after getting pinched in turn one. He made those mains with 24 and 20 riders respectively.

Do you ever make it out to any of the western nationals? How about Salt Lake or Dacono? We will have to meet up if you do (or if we hit any midwestern nats). My 7yo wants to chase a NAG plate next year and we are prtty sure he can do it. We are planning to hit at least 8 - 10 nationals plus the Grands next year.

I also have a 4yo girl who started racing at three. Then I have a two year old who talks about nothing but racing. We also have one more on the way so it looks like this will be the family sport for all four kids. And you have seven? WOW!
