I've been having issues with my 2000 Disco 2 starting here lately; it takes two or three times to start up. I have a new starter ready to go in; are there any tips or tricks to get the old one out? I'm thinking removing the heat shield may be necessary

Yes. The heat shield has to go. Disconnect the battery to keeps things calm. It was a lot of twisting and dare I say, fuckery, to get it in place. If you drop the Y pipe it’s a lot easier but only if you know it will come off without snapping something. It can be done with everything but the heat shield in place.

Use a good 8mm Allen head socket & lots of extensions, but the #1 thing = clean all the crud out of the allen head bolts on the starter and when installing the 8mm Allen head socket make sure it's seated fully into the bolt or you'll just round the allen head bolt out.

When you say “2 or 3 times to start up”do you mean cranks over 2 to 3 times then runs? If so it’s not a starter problem could be fuel pump not holding pressure problem?

Good catch; I replaced the fuel canister just now and cranks right up no problem now
