At least i wasn't on the side of the road with a flat.

I was working on the brakes and went to jack up the truck. Low and behold that POS jack was leaking oil and wouldn't go up at all. I haven't used it in years and luckily discovered it now.

What's a good replacement that will jack up to the proper height? What is the proper height?

I'm not paying for another piece of crap like this one. I'm hauling around a 6 ton jack in the back that takes up too much room.

I have one from harbor freight in the factory location under the hood. 3 ton I think? Works great.

The factory bottle jack is actually very good. Considering that your jack is at least 12 years old (and maybe as old as 21), and has spent it's life under a hood in a very hot engine bay, maybe the seals finally went bad on it?

HF's hydraulic stuff is awesome. Never had a problem with the 3 jacks I have from them.

There are plenty of basic bottle jacks out there, but none that I know of telescope to reach high ground clearance vehicles, or that cradle the axle tube like the LR jack.

This. I'm trying to picture where on a Rover I'd feel comfortable placing a standard bottle jack and I'm coming up empty.
If I ever replace my factory jack I'll be making/buying a cradle adapter for a standard bottle jack.

These are getting pretty rare but if you can find a factory Toyota Land Cruiser jack they are awesome. They are mechanical, can be dismantled for repair have a great reach and fit in the spot for the factory LR jack. They require a handle with a hook on the end, I made a one piece out of 3/8 rebar. And by Land Cruiser I mean early to at least '86 FJ-40 through FJ-62. They're not a high lift, but they're pretty tough and don't spring leaks.

Anyone tried to rebuild a LR jack? I always liked mine until it puked its guts up; I keep thinking about trying to rebuild it but just have too many other distractions to mess around with it.

There are rebuild instructions floating around. I may even have a copy in my email. I've never done it as I didn't feel like playing "Which O-Ring Fits??" down at the hydraulic shop.

Anywhere on the axle tube? You don't "need" the safety cradle. Sure, its nice to have but not necessary.

Yea. What if you are not on a level surface? I have a feeling some of those $20 jacks will just end up leaking like the LR one. Atlantic British wants $179 for a new one. F that.

Done it with the bottle jack sitting on a flat rock when I got my truck wedged in a weird spot off road and had to lift it up to avoid some potential damage. No issues. It isn't a hi-lift, its just a bottle jack.

I've never had any issues with any HF hydraulic products leaking, ever.

I'm not saying it can't be done, I'm just saying I won't be doing that.

Several companies make add-on cradles for bottle jacks, among them:

Safe Jack Axle Tube Pad

Click around that site as there are a LOT of options for safe lifting. I have never used their product, just remembered reading about them.

The LR jack in my LWB was stored by the original owner with the relief valve open, and subsequently leaked all its oil. My particular LR jack is non-serviceable (welded and/or staked fittings), but simply refilling it and leaving the relief closed proved it is still serviceable! When the time comes I'll likely pick-up a few Safe Jack items to supplement a new bottle jack.
