I have a '96 D1.

About a week ago I was doing some work with some friends and running an Air Compressor from the cigar lighter socket. We would use it to fill up an air tank portable air tank and when it was depleted go back to the truck and rifll it from the compressor. When we were finished with the project I went to start the truck and the batteriy was dead. Really dead.

We jumped started the truck and while it was idling someone noticed the brake lights were on. When I pushed on the brake peddle they would go out. Just the opposite of what is supposed to happen.

I thenpulled the brake switch plug and the brake lights went out. I had had the brake switch fail before so I got out my emergency brake light switch. (An old radio shack microphone with an old brake switch housing plug on the other end. Push the button for brake lights and/or getting out of park, release switch for driviing). This worked as promised and when the mike button was pushed the brakes would com on, and when released they would go out.)

I tested the "failed brake switch and both sets of contacts were closed. when the button was pushed they would open. This is the opposite of what logic and my one D1 electric diagram says. The switch should normally be open, and close when the button/brake pedal is depressed.

I bought a new switch, and when it arrived I tested it. The contacts on the new switch are normally closed and open when the button is pushed. That is two switches that operate the opposite of logic, the diagram, and my own temporary switch. Is this new switch defective?

Are the contacts for a D1 brake switch normally closed? Is there some other problem I should be looking for?

I don't think two brake switches are both bad. They should be open when the pedal is not depressed. I would try looking at fuses and then test the switch to relay to see if there are any problems. If not go from there. Sounds like your good with electrical :)

contacts should be open when plunger is depressed and closed when it's extended.

the brake pedal keeps the plunger pushed in when not being used.

Thanks to both Roving and Post for their fast and informative replies.

I was overthinking the problem without actually looking at the construction. Yes I am reasonably good with electrical. Embarrassingly also good with mechanicals, when I take the time to really study the problem. A local mechanic also told me to stop thinking about it and just go try the replacement. (Ah gee! Do I haf ta?)

In my mid the switches were mounted on the pedal and not a bracket. Turns out that the old switch had com out of adjustment somehow. (Maybe my size 13 boots had som influence.) Got everything back in place now plus a spare switch for my trouble. The spare switch and mymicrophone switch go back in the bailout box.

Thanks again for your replies.
