My brake lights won’t light up in daylight and won’t go off at night. If it were the brake switch I wouldn’t be able to get it out of park. Help?

Brake Lights or Running Lights?

This makes no sense - "My brake lights won’t light up in daylight and won’t go off at night."

No,it’s the sun providing a reflection of light. But it’s real hard to see. it is not the brake switch because I can pull it out of park. No DRL

No the brake lights are all permanently running on. Why?
The first Disco I owned was a 98 Auto. It had the same issue, on mine it was the switch on the brake pedal. The previous owner had used the rover so long with that issue that damage was done to the bulb holders ,in one case to the whole lamp assembly.

every D1 taillight I've seen has had 1157 bulbs installed at somepoint and suffered partial meltdown.

get a new bulb holder, clean up the contacts on the light housing, tape up any holes, then install led 1157 or the OE p215w.

Guys I got a 2004 D2. But I will look into a new brake switch.

I had a 2001 I think. Had the same problem. I want to say it was the spring. Just got "tired" and wouldn't hold the pedal off the switch. But that was twenty years ago so maybe it was the switch. That said a limited number of things will keep your brake lights burning. It almost has to be in that switch/pedal.

Wrong bulb? Are you saying when the lights are turned on the brake lights won't shut off? And with no lights on in the truck you can hardly see them? If you have the correct bulbs in the thing then you might have excessive resistance in the circuit someplace. The connectors German mentioned would be a great place to start.

When the running lights are on the brakes light up. I haven’t been playing with the bulbs it just happened. Where I live you have summer and winter cars. Except mine aren’t rusted shoeboxes. I had a Taurus you couldn’t drive from October through may. Fuel pump. But that’s not this. It just happened too. I put on the runners and rear fogs so as it is my logic it’s better to run with brake lights on than no brake lights. Even installed a LED high brake light to be even brighter.

My brake lights stopped working. I didn't know it until I discovered my cruise control didn't work. I could put it in Drive with no problem, so the brake light switch doesn't affect that. I replaced the switch and the cruise control worked again, as well as the lights. So replace the switch. Super easy.
