How much more likely am I to break axle shafts on my DII with 285/75, than with 265/75? I am running ARB's front and rear with 4.11 gears.

more tire equals more stress on the axles. All just depends on what you do. You can break axles on 265/75.

What type of wheeling are you going to be doing? Do you really need that big of tire for what you require?

I need as much height as possible for clearing mud, rocks, stumps, snow etc.. A little of everything. My old rig (full size Jeep) sat on 38.5 swampers. This is more of a long range travel/wheeling/hunting rig that needs to get me and my family there and back. If I new someone was coming out with heavy front shafts I would just go to 285's. One person I spoke to said that axles break extremely easy on that size of tire just under torque alone. If I have to I will just give up on being able to go some of the places I used to in order to save on breaking things everytime I go out.

I'm running that size with TruTracs front and rear and haven't snapped an axle.
With front and rear ARB's you should be good as long as you don't stress them when locked. From your description of what you use the truck for you'll be fine.
Don't listen to the people that tell you your axles will snap with that size, there's plenty of us on the board here running that size tire on D2's.

also, if you check the breaking ARBs thread that i started, it is less likely that you'll damage those lockers and if you were running detriots. locked=breakage at some point. it sounds like you're cognizant of the risks and will act accordingly. FWIW, there's a guy in our club that runs an ARB in the rear in PNW terrain and hasn't broken yet. but, i'm sure he will. if for no other reason than fatigue.

Sounds good. I will just go with the 285's and carry a spare set of shafts just in case. I can at least upgrade the rear shafts so I do not have worry so much about them.

Racerwad, I just registered at the overland society so I will eventually see you on the trail. Thanks,

The rear is pretty tough if you installed hd axles. I've twisted my rear driveshaft without breaking anything. As for the front, you'll break or eat a front cv at some point...it's not a matter of if, but when...I've been running TT's front and rear for 3 years now, been just about everywhere and I've broken 4 front's cv's, 2 in the east on muddy terrian and 2 out west, one in Sedona and one in my backyard...carry a spare front cv and you'll be fine...
