Quote:performance: payload without machine gun or radio, 2,866lb (1,300kg), top speed 62mph, 0-60mph in 40sec, typical fuel economy on test 16.7mpg (497 miles on a full 29.7-gallon fuel tank).

With those speed numbers I am not surprised with the economy.

I am still wondering why they would quote the weight without machine gun and radio......what, they think you're going to throw rocks and send smoke signals?

Oh.....maybe it's BYOMG [Bring your own machine gun]??

Side of the road....
Those new HMMWVs look good. I am not a big fan of the turret set up though. It will offer great protection, but it will really cut down on the gunner's visibilty.

It's either they lose visibilty or they become more vulnerable. Right now there are several setups the Army and Marines use, but this new setup is by far the most protective from the looks of it. The "windows" do provide some visibility that would have been lost.

Those windows won't do much. They are just like the windows in the M114 and M116up-armor HMMWVs and the M998 HMMWvs with retrofitted armor. You line of sight is horribly small.

Yeh we always had a few of the 1114s with the "add on" armor kits and they are pretty annoying. They make a lot of noise and the windows are a PITA to operate.

The older 1114s with the factory armor and windows were pretty nice with the windows that came down. Now the newer 1152s slide back and open very little. Not to mention the doors on the new 1152s weigh in at 450 lbs. The 1114s were almost 350. A big difference when you park on a slight incline or decline. That door does not want to open or the other way around........it wants to take your leg off.

All of them have very shitty visibility.

It makes you wonder why they didnt use these when the war started in 03. It would have saved alot of lives from sniper attack. :patriot:

When the war started they we not even using armor on the trucks. Guys were finding scrap steel and welding it on. But Rumsfeld comment was along the lines of, "You fight a war with the equipment you have..........." Pretty lame excuse.

The trucks they have now will stop a .50 cal.

How is that not a blatant copy of the Humvee?

Humvee? That looks like the H2 I parked next to at the mall the other day, minus the chrome door handles & gas door.

I didn't want to be the one to say that, but yes they do! They are great in the sense that they now protect their occupants very well and when used gently they are very reliable and valuable.
Start driving them like a tank and they break VERY easily. At 16,000 lbs they were never designed to carry that kind of weight. Only a very few items were upgraded to account for the extra weight. Slightly larger half shafts and "snow plow" springs. A few minor tweeks to the frame and that's pretty much it.
Not only that, but the "signature" these vehicles give off is crazy. Especially in places like Afghanistan. You can hear them coming from miles away and they stick out like a sore thumb in the day, night, etc. They give themselves away long before they get to their objective.
I'm all about something smaller and more tactical anyhow. Like a badass Hilux. Someone's already using those and they work very nice.

The MRAPs are pretty cool and all, but when you start getting in-country and are trying to get around on those goat trails you need something small. Least I would think so.

Also when you arrive in something like the MRAP you are giving off the impression that regardless of the mission you are there to kill anything and everybody. That's not the impression we always want to have when we are trying to come across as "We are American's here to help you." That translation is lost rather quickly when you have armored up 1152 and crewserve weapon mounted on top.

The Humvees aren't bad though in some situations and getting around some of the smaller trails and sand that you'd never get an MRAP close to.

If you've got the space for one of those things I am sure they are quite useful. Goat trails in the mountains won't be one of them.

If you've got lots of guys trying to kill you, I'd like to be in one of those. A mobile tank with space. I wonder when you'll be able to get those at surplus!
