British Cars We Wish They Still Made

Somebody should call them and tell them the picture above the heading "1948 Land Rover" is actually a SIII which was made in the early 70's. :D

It's cool nonetheless for them to recognize the true heritage of Land Rover. I like what was written in the last paragraph...

True, you might want heat, a hardtop and other niceties, but the point of the original Land Rover was simply that it would go anywhere, not that it would be comfy or cute or look cool. It would get you there but, like any good horse, it would be dumb, there'd be flies, and you'd have to take care of it. For $14,000, Land Rover might find a lot more customers who want cheap transport that can also climb mountains.

Well, except that $14,000 wouldn't include some things that are required here, like DOT compliance, EPA compliance etc. But still could be a helluva lot less than 40k.

As a teenager back in the 1970's I had a 1959 TR 3 that I had so much fun driving. Sitting low to the road without the side curtains and the long hood with big ass fenders. I wish I had never sold that car. It was in showroom shape.

Several years ago (eight, maybe?) there was this movement afoot at LRNA HQ amongst the staff to import a bare-bones 110 Defender. Just enough to be DoT-legal, but with roll-up windows, vinyl seats, a hose-out interior, even the option of a *removable* hood (think cab-top) for the pick-up variant. Price point was to be somewhere south of $20,000. This same group also wanted a "mothership/satellite" style of dealer network, with smaller sales/service establishments in smaller markets with maybe one or two vehilces actually displayed for sale. Needless to say, upper management was *aghast* at the idea.

Too bad...Rover could have *owned* the 4WD market if they had taken their heads out of their corporate arses. Then again, they could have owned the market in the early 1970's if they had wanted to back then. Instead, they bailed....

I wish Land Rover still made a Land Rover....

For me it was a 72 TR6. Best car I ever drove in snow and ice. Well balanced, lots of low end torque out of the straight 6, and relatively big tires. As always, wish I still had it.

Current project is a 59 Austin Healey 3000 BN7. When time and money are availabe I make a little progress. I also like the MGA's. I'll second the articles Sunbeam Tiger reference. They sure are expensive now.

1953 MG TD. My bro restored one when we were kids. We used to tear up the country roads in that little thing. Sure was fun, especially cornering. Then idiot-boy sold it for a new ORANGE Fiat.

KJ

I sorta agree Sandy, but both Land Rover and IH (both best in class IMO) left the pickup/4WD market about the same time. The other mfg's here in the US were moving towards more and more creature comforts, not the target of either Rover or IH. Well, except for the Range Rover, which was way overpriced for the 4WD market at that point (people weren't looking for that level of comfort yet). IH pickups cost more too, since every one was a special order.

But I agree, I still wish Land Rover made Land Rovers.

Yeah I know I'm going to take some stick for it. But I really also like the Stag as well. Pity they put the funky V8 in it instead of the LR/MG V8

Yeah you got that right Marcus - The B cars were the cats pygamas, bees knees, donkeys bollocks ;) I suppose I should add the cossie sierra 500 to the list - just because. But then again I still pine for my old x-pack RS

I too had a '72 TR6, it was my first car. Man that thing was great. I remember that it was a pain in the ass to find the "red line" michellins to fit it.
