pulling away from a stop light of all things, BAM! got it home in front wheel drive. Any tips to consider before I go in after it? I have a couple of sets of seals in hand. I think I have a line on another axle shaft as well.

In 40 years of driving my Rover, I've never broken an axle shaft off road. It's always as you said: pulling away from a dead stop on a hard-surfaced road.

Don't bother with any 'used' axle shaft. Even some of the latter-day new stuff (made in India) is suspect.

If you are extremely lucky, have good Karma built up and the Rover gods are smiling down on you, the shaft broke at the outer flange. 5 minutes and vise grips and you are rolling again. Usually, it breaks inside the diff. There are special tools for removing the detritus, but usually you have to drop the diff.

Cheers

First thing I would recommend is pulling off the little "hub caps" and then rotating the wheel. See if the flange broke. I did that once, broke a flange but I thought I had killed the diff or an axle. After tearing apart the entire axle, I found out it was just the flange. As you can imagine, flange replacement is easy.

Good used shafts are fine. I mean, upgrading to 24 spline and chromoly shafts are better, but as long as the splines aren't twisted, should be ok.

short side broke in the diff. I have the driveshaft out and the axles out, just need to pull the diff and get the little bits out.

The diff is fine, had to disassemble it partially to get the broken stub out.

I had to pull the center pin and pound it back out, it had gauged the walls a bit.

I used the dremmel and a tiny sander bit to smooth all that out. If I can get to it tomorrow I will put it all back together after digging the metal bits out of the bottom of the axle. The other shaft looks newer and in better shape. Is it the shorter side that usually breaks?

Not in my experience. I've always broken the long one - never the short one - over four decades of driving the same vehicle.

my guess is that the other must have broken some time back, it is much newer looking. I figure since I am not taking this offroad for more than Forest Service Roads I figure it should last.

Until the pinion pin falls out or breaks.

Quit being such a cheapfuck and fix it to last.

I was going to fill it with rare lizards from around Harrisonburg and drive over all the trank traps I can find.

Why would you care what I do with my truck, when you know I don't what or need your advice? Clearly you miss me.

Only an idiot would repair a 10-spilne carrier that most parts places would give you for free just to get rid of it. It's called junk. There is a reason you were working on it. It's because it sucks.

No one cares about how you played dentist and took a Dremel (spelled correctly, btw) tool to fix a shitty product just so it can fail again. That's the problem with Dweb today - too many cheapfucks who think they're clever when in reality they just end up looking like a cheapfuck.

Then, to top it off, you're going to replace your broken stock 10 spline axles with more stock 10 spline axles. You're a fucking genius! You know why they broke in the first place? Because they're cheap. Anyone with half a brain would understand this by now, and you of all people, who had countless stock diff and axles failures over the years, should know this. But you're too fucking stupid to learn. Instead, you're that guy who breaks on every outing and stalls the field while you work on your shit. Then you wonder why no one goes wheeling with you unless it's at a ROAV event. Get a clue.

Read your own fucking sig line, dumbass.

I missed the part where I begin to care what you think, but maybe somebody died while you were typing? It is not an offroad truck, the 40 year old part finally broke. I guess if this one lasts only 20 years I will have gotten my money's worth. You still have to ask yourself, why do you care, and if you don't then why are you still posting to me? Are you going to send me phone pics of your junk next? I have a friend who is a psychologist and works with people with childhood trauma, maybe it is time to face whatever is demonizing you. I can refer you. Let the healing begin. The first step is just admitting you have a problem and need help.

Perhaps you should take your own advice and get help for your addiction to little boys, Mr. Sandusky. We've all heard the stories about you while sitting around the camp fires. It never fails that someone asks the big question, "Is Chuck really gay?". Maybe it's your feminine voice or your limp swagger. I don't know, but it is strange everyone else picks up on it, too. Then there is the fact you're that male middle school teacher who makes the students uncomfortable with your wondering eyes and comments. Yeah, us locals have heard about you, Jerry. BTW, isn't this weeks homework assignment about the Rough Riders? I bet the subject gets you all hot and bothered, doesn't it? I bet you can't wait to talk about Leonard's Wood tomorrow. You should start your treatment soon, before we have a Stuarts Draft scandal to deal with.

the classic deflection of a wounded soul. There is help, you just have to accept it. You admit to thinking about my voice and my walk, what does that say... you are commenting on my threads still. Is it your mom or your dad that did this to you?

I don't see what's bad about spending 50.00 on an axle vs 300 plus diffs etc for 24 spline, I bet it'll last another 10 years..

Ren Ching sent me a set for $40 so I have a spare for the shorter one that is more likely to break. Just need to start putting it all back together.

when i replaced my 20 year old 10 spline dif, i just threw in a good used 20 year old 10 spline dif. because it wasnt the dif's fault that it broke when i was hammering on it like an idiot. and it will most likely last another 20 years.
