Broken plastic piece under gear indicator cover

Guys,

Yesterday my plastic gear indicator cover had a nasty crunching sound and when I pulled the cover off I discovered a 2.5" plastic piece that had broken away. I can't figure out what the purpose of this piece was, it still shifts fine in all gears, but is not as smooth, particulary in and out of park.

Any ideas? Should I replace or just continue to drive?
