Ive got a BAR and was going to order another scope for it, a Leupold VX3-L 10x50 do any of you know if the Ultra Low Leupold scope rings will work or will only the standard low rings work? It looks like the ultra low rings may work but I cant find any information on the Leupold page.

With a 50mm reticle I wouldn't bet on any low or ultra low rings working.

I'd definately check before ordering.

I don't see how a really large and powerful scope belongs on an autoloader? If you need an auto you don't need a 10x scope with a 50mm objective and vice versa. It would just seem there is a better tool for the job.

+1, why put that scope on such a inaccurate rifle? the last two I shot were grouping 4-5" at 100 yards,

The VX line of scopes all feature variable powers, so I'm guessing it's actually a 3.5-10x, which is not far off the standard 3-9's that sit atop the vast majority of rifles.

That said, I'd be inclined to agree that the 50 mm obj. is not necessary. Most hunting rifles seem to be best suited with a 40-ish mm obj.

Might be worth looking into a Conquest.

Not that I'm a Browning Rifle fan, but I've seen some of those BAR's that are really accurate in the right hands. As far as a 50mm objective, if you live in an area that the deer move mostly early in the morning or just at dark, you need to gather as much light as you can.

So if accuracy from a cheap bolt action is less than 1" what do you think really accurate is .25-.30"?
Just about everybody I have ever known with one was happy to get a 1.5-2" group with handloads and close to 4" with factory ammo, that's only accurate compared to a AK, even a cheap Weatherby will at least shoot twice as well.
I'm not saying it's not possible a new barrel with a tighter chamber and a few thousands dollars in work will get it sub-MOA or you could buy a $400 bolt action and get the same results.

Thats sort of an oversimplified explanation. You are gaining an inconsequential increase in exit pupil(the amount of light reaching the eye) vs. a 3-9x40mm scope and even less so as you turn up the magnification. If you can't see the crosshairs with any scope with quality optics, then you are outside legal shooting hours. Don't buy the hype of all the newest coatings etc.

In the end it's your money and you can do what makes you happy.

Its a 4.5-10x50 the amount of light it "gathers" is much better than the Nikon Monarch it replaced. If youve seen the VX3L then you know its designed to sit lower on the gun. It works fine on my BAR with the ultra-low rings. As far as the auto vs. bolt actions and accuracy, sean mine even without the boss was grouping 1-2" at ~150 yards and I didnt have a shooting bench and was using factory loads. Ive shot handloads in a BAR with the Boss through the same hole.

Didn't you just back up what I said??? The problem I have with Browning is the dollar amount verses the action that you get with a bolt action. Tear one down and see what you have in steel vs pot metal.

Certain times of the day, shadow are created that are really hard to see. This does not mean that one is hunting outside the legal times. I agree with you about they hype of scope coatings. The best advice that I can give is to go to a local hunting store and look through the scopes yourself and compare them. That's what I did and looked at Leupold, Swarovski, and the Zeiss Conquest. The Zeiss beat them hands down to my eye, but that's my eye looking through them.
