I already own an 04 DII that had been modified. I then returned it to stock becuase it would not sell, but now find myself and my wife not wanting to to sell it after all. I plan on buying another pre 96 DI and I am trying to decide which would be better to build while the other one is my wifes daily driver. The one I build will be my daily driver as I plan on selling my new truck and car. Lift will be at least a 3", and I will have ARB's front and rear. Any ideas as to which and why would be appreciated.

Dude screw the Discos build up a fuckin Freelander..

The D1 will be the popular choice.
Simpler
Full floaters
not many electric gizmos
and smaller.

D1...
way easier to work on
plenty of donor vehicles
not a lot of electronics to deal with

Came across a thread that pretty much answered everything. I will go with a DI for mods. Just hope the little 3.9 will be up to the task of pulling a small trailer back to Montana during hunting season and in the summer.

the D1 will always be a better platform for a full on trail truck.

Why? Just like Walters last poll I have seen a bunch of reasons why not. I have yet to see proof that one is better than the other. I will agree that DI parts are cheaper but a lot of them will work in the DII. I now own both and aside from comfort and dash lights they are basically the same.

I will consede that the cheap wheel bearings are fantastic for the DI but the sealed bearing design on the DII is easier to change.

gotta disagree...totally different axles, transmission, engine, engine management, brake system...

the rear over hang of a D1 makes it a better trail truck.

the D1 has true fullfloating axles so the spares needed to be carried along take up much less space then the shafts and hubs you would need to carry for a DII.

the D1's suspension is simpler and flexes better.

the narrow stance of a D1 allows it to fit on tight trails better. people think the length of the DII is its only short coming, I happen to think its width hinders it as well without really giving it any more stability off road.

All D1's come with a CDL so getting a CDL equiped truck is way way cheaper. A trail truck without a CDL is a castrated bull.

the best trail trucks are simple. The D1 is the clear winner in simple. allthough the DII's are not known for stranding people they do have more nagging issues to deal with.

turning radius, The D1's aremuch tighter then the DII's and trail trucks are all about turning radius.

The door handles are flush on a D1 and stick out on a DII... four less things to catch on a tree or rock.

add these up and a fewother I am sure I'm forgetting and like I said...D1's the choice for a trail truck:D

Yup, I know first hand how annoying it is to lean the DII on a bank, whereas the D1 would have just slid along happily.

Those suspension differences must be what make my 04 DII handle so much better at speed in the mtn highways but I can see where the D1 just "seemed" more compliant off road.

Now that my mom gave back my DII and it's better suited as my daily-work-driver, I'm going to have some fun in the D1 again.

Back when I bought it in 2001, and went on my first local rover club trail run, they nicknamed me "camel trophy guy" - which I had no knowledge about at the time. All I knew was, "dude, I'm drivin a Land Rover - I can go through ANYTHING with a good line, finness, momentum, and throttle at the right time..." It was stock, with Michelin xpc tires but I got through things guys with mtrs and little lifts didn't make - maybe it was just the line, more likely the momentum that made everyone say "whoooooah" ;)

Lucky I didn't ever break anything.

-D1 all the way! Unless of course a D90 is an option, one of those with lockers and swampers pulled me out twice.
