Is there a necessity to having a bull bar? i am doign light to moderate off roading, partly getting a bumper for looks(to be honest) , lights and possibility of a winch way in the future.

I have been looking at the TJM- T17 and was wondering if there is any advantage to having a bullbar (TJM-T15).

its for an 04 Disco.

thanks in advance
Alex

Deer bar.

Actually, the TJM bumpers are made in Austrailia, so it would be a Roo Bar.

If they were absolutely necessary, they would be builtin. If you don't like it, don't get one. Craig takes his truck off road all the time and doesn't have one.

If you plan on running into a lot of large animals, trees or rocks, the bullbar might save your front end. Otherwise, you can do what Kyle does and steer around obstacles.

i wasnt planning on getting one. but since they were built in I was wondering what type of off-road obstacles they were really meant to help you with thats all. pardon my ignorance on the subject.

thanks.

The improvement in your front approach angle with a bull bar will be incredible. However, if you don't plan on adding a winch anytime soon, your best bet would be to just run your truck as is until you break your bumper on the trail. It will happen eventually!

How does a bull bar improve your approach angle? Isn't approach angle a function of your bumpers height or level above the ground rather than the bull bar attached to the top of the bumper?

I forgot to add that I am in the same boat. I am looking at a t-17 for my 98 disco 1 because I do not see the need in the bull bar on the bumper. I am planning on getting a winch in the future(like in a year) but I won't ever go offroading alone, and 2 out of my 4 buds that go have winches and the 3rd is getting a warn bumper and winch mount and winch for his TJ so it isn't necessary for me to get one.

I will be cutting off the lower part of my front bumper and getting rid of the factory fog lights down there to improve the angle plus I think it looks pretty cool.

I do want a new bumper for the looks too though  but don't have money to spend for looks.

Ahhh, now I see what you mean. I think the advantage of the "bull bar" type TJM bumper is the protection afforded to the front corners of your rig if you find yourself on tight, narrow trails with lots of trees and limbs to squeeze through. That, and it looks a hell of a lot cooler.

If you are already going to drop so much coin on a bumper, may as well save up just a bit longer to get the one that is really going to be what you want
