I am preparing to build my front winch bumper - Is 3/16" metal the standard thickness most people use?

A lot use 3/16th. I was gonna try to build one but I'm not that great of a weldor so I ended up going with an RTE because I figured with something as important as a winch mount I want to make sure it's done properly. RTE uses 1/4 stock and they are just amazing. I'll save my welding skill for the rear bumper.

If I was to build a winch bumper I would definatly use 1/4 for the winch, mounts and boxing. Maybe clad it with 3/16.

Not sure I get this one. What do you mean by bottom brackets?

i don't get it either. for the wings, you can use small sq or rectangular tubing to make a frame and then sheet it. kinda like a monocoque (sp?) frame. whatever you do, try and maintain a box section to keep it strong but light.

The bottom piece of the bumper (in the red circle) is what I am calling the bottom bracket - do I need to weld rectangular tubing behind the wing or will it be strong enough on its own?

it will support its own weight but won't do a whole lot when you need to drive by braille.
you could:

-box it in on all four sides
-build a framework and skin it

consider what you would use the wings for and build accordingly. that is, you don't want it to bend in any of four possible directions (well, an infinate #) so make sure it won't in your design.
