Bushing cups: qe?

Ok I searched, but couldn't find any information, so hopefully you can help.

Ok, what is the purpose for the bushing cups on the lower rear shock shock mounts on a D1? Besides being a pinch/bind point that could possibly result in a failure of the lower shock pin, I don't see the purpose for them. Should I just take the cutting wheel to them?

Anyone else cut them off and run with no problems?? There should be no problem running without them, but I'm no engineer.
