get an ARB, but if money is tight get this http://www.lucky8llc.com/Products.asp?ProductID=2181 you don't want best price, you want best service.

a detroit is nice, but having the ability to unlock is priceless. why are you looking for a detroit as opposed to a manual locker?

buy an arb....:D

i hate my detroit. yes, it does work, yes it is very tough (with 36" swampers, it works), but when you are sliding sideways it's nice to be able to unlock it and go straight.

depends where you wheel and your driving style on the auto vs selectable locker debate. I really feel like the grass is always greener on the other side with this.... hence i don't run a locker yet....

I bought a Detroit a few months ago for my D2 from Randy's Ring and Pinion...even cheaper than they had advertised on-line, paid $529 if I remember correctly. I have one in my RRC as well and after loads of offroad use in all kinds of conditions and as a daily driver, I'm totally satisfied with it's performance and durability. I have had it unwind a few times on the D2 and trip the 3 amigos - they went away, but once I did use the fantastic RSW Solutions 3 Amigos Reset tool to sort them out...Just a heads up.

Hi,

there will very soon be many more options of limited slip and locking diffs available soon, one of these we will be stocking is the 'Kaiser locker' which we have been testing in our 90 for the last few weeks,

this is far better than the Detroit, much smoother operation with no clunking and banging like the Detroit does,

We have also had big reliability problems with the Detroit and this coupled with very poor customer service caused us to stop selling them a couple of years ago,

The Kaiser uses 'ramp and roller' one way clutches as opposed to the Detroit 'dog clutches', we are hoping the Kaiser will be much more reliable long term,

We expect the first batch early in the new year, having driven both I would suggest waiting for the Kaiser, price will be about ? 445 UKP

At $712US + having to pay shipping across the pond it not only needs to be better than a Detroit it needs to be better than an ARB.

Yes - the Kaiser sounds great, but is $$$. I'm curious as to the "reliability" issues he's talking about in regards to Detroit lockers. It's standard kit really.

Hey Tobias,

While you were away from the board there was a big discussion/explanation of the Kaiser thirds. I think Mongo started it. He knows some folks in Arizona running them. There is a lot of stuff on youtube as well. Look into it. It is pretty amazing how these things work. A lot of folks in South America have been wheeling on these hard, many on stock axles without a hitch. They appear to "soft" load for lack of better terms. I'd certainly consider them if I were in the market and had the extra cash.

Cheers,

Mike
