Hello all,

Looking to buy a 99' DII. Im the happy owner of a 97' DI, but know much about the dII's. Just want to make sure the 99' DII isnt known for any major issues like the 03' DII's are. Any advice on what to look out for on this year would helpful.

Like I said, Ive already have a DI. I love the DI's, but honestly I prefer the DII tail lights. In any case, its not a chose I have. Guy wants to trade his 99' for a 00' cherokee 2wd.

you can swap the rear panels and have d2 rear taillights on your d1 too :D

- front driveshaft should be replaced w/ one w/ greaseable ujoints
- head gaskets go on these, seems like every one of them need it at some time.. if you can do the job yourself you're looking at ~500 for gaskets & machine work, to have someone else do it, around $2k
- throttle body preheater gasket leaks coolant, easy fix
- three amigos (abs, tc & hdc lights) ... search around for it.

those are the most common issues.

Both prop shafts have already been replaced recently. Unfortunately with none greaseable ones. Im familar with the three amigos, and it doesnt have that issue... Yet.

As for the head gasket. Is that a 99 specific problem, or a DII problem in general?

Thanks Ryan

D2 problem in general ... just something you have to live with in the back of your head.. if you see coolant starting to disappear or smell antifreeze, you most likely have to do the job..

Now compared to the DI's, how do the DII's stack up on the trails? Aside from the diff lock linkage. Going to install that as soon as possible. Looks like the approach angle is worse?

If it's a '99, then you have a LT230 transfer case that has the locking ability, you just need to add a mechanism to lock it (either a D1 shifter, a 04 D2 shifter [nicest], or some sort of cheap-bastard method).

Once that's locked, you then have the traction control working as well, which actually is pretty nice when it works and when driven right.

Approach angle can be fixed by trimming the bottom of the front bumper.. the departure angle is a lot worse than a D1 due to the extra 6" of cargo area the trunk has.

Once again Ryan, thank you. I think Im going to start using this forum. Over 20 views with the same post on LRO and not one response. Typical.

You might get a few interesting responses to this given that the D1 has shorter rear overhang, swivel joints A-Frame rear and when all locked up of course is a great bit of kit. As for stock v stock the D2 is more capable given the traction control. I have both.

Cheers

About what I was thinking. I guess Ill just use the DII for the weekend camping trips, and the DI for the more agressive trail runs. Thanks to everyone.

Better check that the 3 amigo lights come on the dash when you turn on the key more than a few have found the bulbs ripped out or tape over them, don't ask me how I know!:banghead:

Guy was someone that doesnt know or care anything about Rovers. Thought he could sell a sh*t truck for a good price because of the green oval on it. Oh well. Anyone else have one they are trying to get rid of?
