Camp BBQ

I need a new bbq, so I started thinking about a camp chef with a bbq box. I know people use them here any suggestions? I want to bbq and have space to cook a side. We like to go out in the middle of no where and crack open the wine and cook up some steaks, aspagus, toast some fresh bread and maybe have a salad make some rice, etc. Looking for a new setup.

OK, this is a good question as I am not a great cook and I'd like to improve. I also don't know alot about grills and barbeques and have heard the pros and cons re: gas vs. charcoal, etc. I do know I like the easier clean up with gas though.

A more knowledgeable friend is pushing me towards this:

It's a bit pricey though looks like it would last through nuclear warfare. What's the thought from the cuisine experts? Ho?

Just tow a smoker to your event like we did for MAR!

I bought a weber gas and go grill at home depot for $50 it works surprisingly well. It is nothing fancy like those other ones, but it works surprisingly well. When i dont use that i use the grill i made out of a beer keg.

I like charcoal, but car camping creates the issue of what to do with the ashes. Being a low imact kind of guy I can't use a charcoal because of that. Any ideas?

Rob-I like that grill, I need to go check it out. I have a stove I'm happy with, just not a BBQ.

Wow those other grills are nice, but pricey. Kind of brings me back to a Camp Chef. For that much I could combine two tools into one with built in legs. Size is an issue, don't want to take up to much space. With those other 2 I need a table to cook with them. Any table ideas too?

Most of the middle of nowhere grill cooking I do is for two people and disposing of the ashes is easy, so gas is not a priority, flavor is and small size is also important.

I use a little sunbeam kettle. Much like the Weber Smokey Joe except the there is a ring handle on the kettle that swings up to hold the top on.

I like that one from Lowes though.

If you go gas, then you have a BTU issue. I like to cook steaks at about 550 degrees and many of those little grills would never get there. A charcoal grill, you just pile more charcoal in there.

I would have to carry out the ash. The deserts here in souther utah the ash wouldn't biodegrade for years.

I am a professional caterer that goes anywhere, for smaller events- under 25- I use the camp chef 3 burner range, it rocks- 90k btu and it fits nicely in the back of a disco. the gas issue isnt that big of a deal buy a detector or just make sure the thing is good and tight.
That pic of the smoker is great is it made of an old propane tank? very cool

I have a 2 burner Camp Chef as well and it does rock. Bought two griddles for it to use at MAR for the first time and they work great too.

I bought the smoker from Lang Smokers in Nehunta Gorgia. I suspect they use propane tanks to start off. I've been very pleased with it. We cooked 200+lbs of ribs, 60 lbs of butts, 25lbs of chicken, duck, bratwurst, and soem other stuff at MAR. PhillyRovers ate well.

Andy man, I am so disappointed. You already violated code #3. Never, and I mean NEVER, call a "grill" a BBQ. A grill is a cooking tool wheras a BBQ is a way of life. :D
