Wife and I are loading up the DII for another unplanned road trip.
We are just going to go to where ever sounds good.
Plan on camping most nights.

Any recommendations on places to see, camp and trials?
Neither of us have been to this area before.

This will be our 3rd trip like this.
1st was a tour of the New England states and last summer we did Colorado and they were both great trips.

I wouldn't pass up the Highland County area. Lots to do back in Green Bank and Cass. Not sure where to camp back there, but there should be plenty of places.

Definitely Highland County, and come through the Shenandoah Valley!

Also, depending on how far south you want to go, check out Mt. Rogers and Grayson-Highlands State Park. View from the top is great and there is plenty of camping up there. You can cruise down 81 and then exit around Damascus heading south east on 58--great mountain drive. If you like fly-fishing there are some nice spots down there as well. And the people in that area are some of the nicest you will meet, north of Tennessee! ;)

Another awesome place is Breaks Interstate Park. It's on the WV, KY, VA border and is called "The Grand Canyon of the South". It's pretty far off the beaten path though--near Grundy, VA.

Thanks

We are in Virgina now and will be hitting some of these places.

We took US250 thru West Virgina to Virgina.
That road was great and made me long for my Corvette!

Now to find those trails.

If you came in through 250 you were right here. Look us up if you are in the area.
I'm up in the Dry River area in the GWNF about every other night fishing.

x2 on Grayson Highlands area. Mt Rogers area is a great day hike and backpacking spot if you want to get away from the rover for a night.

Stopped 2 nights at Loft Mountain camp ground in SNP.
Great camp sites! Nice and quiet and even kind of private with the hedges that surround each site.
Of course I couldn't find any 4x4 trails around there and didn't expect to in a National Park.
Best I rode so far was a rough dirt road.
Had to hit a few wineries with the wife in the truck.
Thanks god most are closed during the week.
But we still have a whole case of wine and she wants to stop at more!

Wish there was more internet access, hell we have been lucky if the cells work.

So where is this "Dry River" area of which you speak.
I'm not from around here remember.
I Found and area on one of the maps called the "Highland" towns called Monterey, Blue Grass, Clover Creek.
Did see a Chapman Mtn but I think that was on the east side of SNP, it's not yours is it Dan?;)

Right now I'm in Strasburg hijacking someone's internet while my wife goes thru and antique store.
I'll try and check in soon, maybe we can hook up and I'll buy a couple beers.

Steve, Dry River is in the GWNF just outside of Harrisonburg on 33 west. Lots of great camping though it is primitive.
There are a couple of trails up there, 2nd Mountain and Dictum Ridge that are no too challenging but scenic. Will you be around this weekend?
PM'ed you my phone number.

Ok I got your number.
"Not to Challenging" is OK since I do have to ride the rig back to Detroit and it's got a case of wine rattling around in the back.
I assume it's more than a narrow dirt road?:smilelol:

I'll see what the wife is up for.
Primitive camping or B&B.
Anyone want to take bets on what she will pick?

Sitting in the Mill Creek Cafe in Goshen on 42.
Family restaurants seem to be hard to find in the small towns here.
But if you need a Family Dollar or a tanning place your go to go.:smilelol:
Going to stay at Douthat State Park.
Than tomorrow we will cruise back north and look for some trails.

And maybe check out some of the B&B's up there as well?

Plans are to start heading home Saturday.:ack:

There is an area called Potts MTN near Douthat. Should be a fun trail.

I did not know there was even a place to eat in Goshen. That area must be going uptown.

We'll look Potts MTN up, thanks!

I wouldn't even call it a "town" but they do have gas pumps out front and they work, an ATM and a deli.
You need to get out more.

Goshen! now you are in my area...at least it used to be. My parents live about 10 or 12 minutes from there. I used to hit up the Mill Creek cafe once a week and get steak and gravy with a double order of fries. That was in the good old days. I haven't been there for 6 or so years. The guy who owned it at the time dropped dead while standing behind the counter. It closed for a while after that. I didn't realize it had reopened. You should slip down rt. 39 and check out Lexington. There are some great places to eat, sleep, and sights to see. If you need anything in the area let me know.
