I'm taking a weeks vacation soon and I'm not sure where to go. I want to do a little camping and some off roading. I'd like to find a place where I can take a week without crossing a paved road just driving trails and camping. I've searched all over online and can't find much info on a good place to do this. Any recommendations?

Thanks,
-Nate

I have some time coming to me and would love to know if anyone knows of a place for off roading and camping in the Georgia area.

Thanks,

i'd recommend eastern Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Island. maybe even Newfoundland.

I was actually looking into Nova Scotia .. Looks at least interesting. I'm not sure how much will actually be off-road.. but looks at least better than anything around here.

a group from down here goes up there every fall for a run through Nova Scotia, Cape Breton and Newfoundland.
i love it up there. it is what coastal Maine was like 30 some years ago. dramatic coastlines, great people, great views and an actual working culture of villages.
my family has a house on the water just down from Lunenburg (Nova Scotia) on Rosehead Bay. very beautiful place.

i have not been up there in several years, but it is always a treat to head up. lots of trails if you take the time to find them. most of the trails will be in Cape Breton.

oh you will enjoy it no doubt. if you need any additional info let me know as i have been up there several times.
you have three choices of how you can get there.

1) take the CAT (high speed ferry) from Portland, ME
2) take the CAT from Bar Harbor, ME
or 3) drive up through Newfoundland, down PEI (Prince Edward Island) and a short ferry to the north shore of NS.

the ferries from Maine bring you into Yarmouth, NS on the western end of NS.

i'd cruise along the south shore and head up to Cape Breton. if you have not checked out some info on that area do so. lots of it on the web. it is much more remote and dramatic out there. especially the coastline.

i wish i had the time or i would meet you up there at our place in Lunenburg. my brother is up there now with his kids.

if you go to Halifax and need a good drink make sure to stop in at the Granite Brewery.

ps: do you know Ray Walker? he lives in Bradford.

I've been reading up like crazy on it. Planning to take a week around the end of this month and run up there. I'll probably take the Cat from Maine. I've heard of a few Walkers, don't know him personally though. All in all, suprising given the less than 8k ppl that live here. I'll definately let you know if I run into any questions. Thanks again!

oh you'd know who Ray Walker is. Walker Building at PSU is named after him. the dude has pretty elaborate parties and rents swans to swim in his pool, etc.
he is a big coal broker and has made his millions a hundred times over selling to countries all over the world.
he's about 80+ years old now. VERY interesting character.

the CAT from Bar Harbor leaves more frequently and is shorter of course. just make sure to check the schedule ahead of time and book a reservation. it ain't cheap, but it saves you some time. if you have time driving through Newfoundland and down through PEI is nice.

check out the Cabot Trail too.

Really? Damn.. learn something new every day. The only people that I know around here that are close to being that well off are the Dukes (Owners of Zippo manufacturing). We've done a pretty good amount of work for both Zippo and Case, we use to make all of the display cases for their lighters and knives. The only reason I'm thinking of taking the cat is to save time, I'll have a whole week but would like to spend most of it up there. The cabot trail is on the list for sure. I guess they have a Rover rally the first week of september up there.

Dude, Bradford is awesome drive 20 min up into the mtns and your set. You can probobly find some old logging or fire trails.
We stopped at Bradford on our way to Niagra Falls a couple of months ago at the MickeyDs and everyone was so damn nice. A guy held the door open for me when I went in and another when I came out. And 2 young men referred to me as Sir! Of coarse I could have been going through culture shock again! Been in Japan so damn long happens everytime I come home to visit.:patriot:

Yeah Bradford is known for that, our crime rate is so low that most of us don't even lock our doors. I've been all over as far as trails around here, we have the national forest right beside us which doesn't have many roads designated for 4x4's. I grew up here and other than living in the south for a few years have been here my entire life. Next time you are going to be through this area give me a PM and we'll go cruise some trails.

If Cape Breton is your primary destination and you do not intend to spend time in Halifax and points south, the CAT is pointless. If you do take the CAT, be sure to get shitfaced in Halifax. You can read some of my recent amusement at http://www.expeditionrider.com/Maritimes.shtml

New Brunswick has shitloads of snowmobile trails that you can take a truck on too.

Mark is the Nova Scotia whore! all this talk has got me itching to head up there. unfortunately my families house up there is getting closed up in about a month. :(

i really hope i can make the ride up there in the late fall with a group of rovers that are going up for sure.

i just love it up there. great people and no crowds or obnoxious people to deal with.
