Any recommendations on good places to camp in VA? I'm looking for something on a lake or river that is mostly tent sites,,,not a crowded RV resort. Google not much help with this. Thanks in advance. -S

Well, leave any sisters, sister-in-laws, neices, or cousins with me. Then, head up to Meadow Knob in the GWNF. It's not a lake or stream, but it has some amazing views of the Valley on both sides.

You could check out the James River, West of Scottsville, not too far from Richmond either. Rolling hills and the river, not a bad setup down there. Not sure if it's crowded this time of year or not, however.

Also, check out Smith Mtn Lake, there might still be some remote-ish places, over near Roanoke.

If it hadn't been for the bad storms on Friday night, my son and I would have been camping at Scales, up on Pine Mountain adjacent to Mt Rogers. Not on a lake or river either, but excellent scenery. (We camped out with the AT thru-hikers at Troutdale, then hiked to Rogers and back the next day).

Find Trout Dale VA, find Konnarock VA; route 603 runs from one to the other. (Route 16 runs from Marion VA, on I-81, down to Troutdale; route 600 runs from Konnarock across the highlands to Whitetop, on US 58.) Off of 603, between 600 and 16, is the forest service road up to Scales. Or, you could go to Grayson Highlands off of 58, and hike the AT up to the same area. Fox Creek, along 603, is a popular trout stream, as is Straight Branch along 58 between Konnarock and Damascus.

You could always camp near Skidmore Lake, do some trout fishing there, drive up to Meadow Knob for the views, over to the Salt Shed for Mud.

He'll be save as long as he does not have any live goats, flour tortillas, or chili peppers with him...

Sherando Lake is always a nice place with bathhouse, boating, fishing, beach, swimming, camping, etc. Can get pretty crowded on the weekends, but there are plenty of sites, both tent and RV. There are some great picnic areas, hiking trails and mountain biking trails as well. We enjoy it when we want a quick and easy trip.....but it is closer to our side of the state than yours. You should go at least once!!

:)

The lake and campground at Peaks of Otter ain't too bad.... There used to be some mighty fine campsites at Panther Falls, but since that is in the watershed for the Lynchburg Reservoir, camping may not be allowed anymore. Hell, *driving* may be illegal there now.

Fort Valley is another target of opportunity...try Camp Roosevelt at the south end. It's an old CCC camp. (Legal) streamside camping in 'unoficial' or unimproved sites is a whole lot rarer these days.

There's a killer - and legal - campsite in the Highland (County) Wildlife Management Area near Sounding Knob/Jack Mountain. Heckuva way from Richmond, tho'. Look for/follow Davis Run.

I don't know if you can camp here, but there is that waterfall after you drive up Devil's Ditch. That seemed like it would be a great place to camp.

Mt. Rogers is an amazing place to camp! I'm actually heading up there next weekend for a 2 day trip...

Damascus has some good places to tent camp, its a neat little town. I'm in Bristol, only about 30 mins away from Damascus, 45 from Mt. Rogers. Ive got plenty of little camping spots around here!

There really aren't any...though there are a couple of "venues" - places to go to watch the carnage as others thrash their trucks. Both are pay per use. There is the "Bodacious" mud pits in Cumberland County south of the James. They have frequent races with major-league beer consumption, but that's not my idea of weekend fun. There's a rock-crawling park near the town of Crozet that is sort of 'built' with placed/dug obstacles. Many of routes require heavily-modified/lifted vehicles.

Each separate segment of the George Washington National Forest (there are 5? 7?) has at least one dedicated ATV trail with numerous other OHV trails, some of which are only seasonally open.
