If it hadn't been for the bad storms on Friday night, my son and I would have been camping at Scales, up on Pine Mountain adjacent to Mt Rogers. Not on a lake or river either, but excellent scenery. (We camped out with the AT thru-hikers at Troutdale, then hiked to Rogers and back the next day).
Find Trout Dale VA, find Konnarock VA; route 603 runs from one to the other. (Route 16 runs from Marion VA, on I-81, down to Troutdale; route 600 runs from Konnarock across the highlands to Whitetop, on US 58.) Off of 603, between 600 and 16, is the forest service road up to Scales. Or, you could go to Grayson Highlands off of 58, and hike the AT up to the same area. Fox Creek, along 603, is a popular trout stream, as is Straight Branch along 58 between Konnarock and Damascus.
