To All,
I have finally finished the drawings for the wood portion of the storage kit/sleeping platform. I am working on the purchased parts source list: threaded wood inserts, hinges, slide rails, aluminum extrusions, etc.
The final design incorporates four (4) aluminum side panels for the drawers. The drawings for these will be finished soon and will be included in the drawing package. You will have to have these made locally or purchased them from me.
Because of the time and effort invested, I would like to receive a modest reimbursement. The drawing package and parts source list are available for $20.00, of which, $5.00 will go to DiscoWeb. The drawer sides panels will be available at an additional cost. Please contact me if you have any questions or comments.
Regards,
Chris D.

Constructing a sleeping shelf is a neat project, but I find that I have enough room to sleep if I just fold the seats down. I'm 5' 11" and don't have to fold up like a pretzel if I sleep diagonally. I have enough room in the front passenger seat to leave all my gear there for the trip.

I really like Macklow's simple version of a sleeping shelf.

I am making progress with the rear storage. Just finished a box that is the same height and width of the 60 seat (of the 60/40 split) so that I can fit laying down on the passenger side. Its still taking a little bit of creativity and some really ghetto first runs of this box, but thats the fun part. At 6'1" its a little short but once I get it all figured out and ready I will post pics.

Keep ths ideas coming and lets see some more pics of what others have done.

I really like the looks of the sleeping area that you have created Mudy_ovl. To all, I was just wondering how much head room their is from the surface to the ceiling. It looks kind of tight.

Anyone else here just park it and sleep in the driver's seat? After a little moving about, you can find a very comfortable position. That's what I've been doing when I have the Disco with me.

Since I'm putting a cage in the Disco, I have been toying with the idea of a canvas hammock that clips to rings attached above the middle of the windshield and above the middle of the rear door. I'm going to try it for a while to see if it's comfortable at all.

I want to make some of those trick little rear window screens like Mantec sells for the defender. You roll up the window to wedge it in, and get fresh air without the bugs.

All the Ideas I've seen here are very cool, though. You guys seem to be on to something very practical.

Cheers,

Kennith

Rob,
The bed platform lays right on top of the center seats when they are folded once. That is about 12" above the cargo area floor. I am 6'1" and I can sit up on the platform without hitting my head. Pretty roomy, but you need to be careful not to hit your noggin' when exiting the rear door.
Chris

PS: I have updated the DIY design to use all wood drawers so people can make the entire storage/sleep platform without needing a sheetmetal shop. IF, that's a big IF, I decide to have unassembled kits made, then I will use the aluminum sided drawer design.

PPS: I have the drawing package 80% done. All wood parts and aluminum brackets are fully dimensioned, the plywood sheet layout is done as is the purchased parts list. Material cost is between $165.00 and $180.00 depending on where you shop. The manufacturing & assembly directions are still being written up. However, if someone wants to be a guinea pig and test out the design, but work with minimal written instructions, I would appreciate detailed feedback. I'm going to send out only two packages, so first come first served.

Rhino Chaser,
Best of luck. I look forward to seeing what your cabinet maker comes up with and what your total costs end up being. Be sure to include detailed pics when it is finished and you post an update.

Chris..I'll be a guinea pig.. Plus, I need to get your recovery gear back to you. Cleaned out my garage last weekend and saw that I still had it. Will you be at work Monday around noon?

Steven,
I will be at work on Monday so you can drop off my gear and pick up a drawing package for the storage/sleeper kit. I will need the recov gear next weekend for the Fall Colors Recce. I will try and bring my Disco so you can see the kit/sleeper first hand.

Here are some pics of the cargo drawer/sleep platform. My CB cubby bracket sits low enough such that the platform rests on top of the center console and doesn't touch the CB.

Looks pretty nice Chris. Looks like you've been having fun.

How much does all that plywood weigh?

What is between the drawers and the cubbies? Is it lost space, or did you incorporate some sort of storage bin there?

Craig,
The end faces in the pictures are solid so there is no access to the spaces between the drawers and the side facing seats. However, I will be adding openings to the end faces so I can stuff items into the two small spaces. Things like straps, shackles, towels, etc would fit great there.

this is my setup...its a homemade storage box fully carpeted with 2 side pockets, one with a power converter mounted inside so ive got power hookup in the rear. i built it the exact height of the rear seats when folded down. all i have to do is fold the rear seats down and ive got a sleeping surface from the back of the front seats all the way to the rear door. it works out quite well actually. i usually keep all of my emergency stuff in the box, plus camping gear when im out on a trip.
