The National Park Service operates four campgrounds: Oregon Inlet, Cape Point, Frisco and Ocracoke. The last one needs reservations, 'cause it's a long way down and a ferry ride away. Not sure about the status of the Frisco campground, as an inlet tried to open nearby not too long ago.

Rules for and places to drive the beach seem to change almost daily. Two weeks ago, some asshole on an ATV did doughnuts at night in a tern colony and the park service closed the entire beach. Thanks alot, chump....

Cape Point is the largest of the campgrounds - Ocracoke, the most remote. Of course, this is the high season for camping....

Cheers

seriously. 100% DEET and even then prepare for hell. mosquitoes will eat you head to toe come sunset.

I disagree. They will carry you away and dine on your carcass at their leisure....

Mark,

Ocracoke would be my suggestion if you've never been to the Outer Banks. It is very unique. We will be there Thanksgiving. When are you planning on going?

Cheers,

Mike

One of the places I've always gone to and loved is farther south down at Cape Lookout by Beaufort, NC. You can take a ferry out to the islands via Harkers Island, completely uninhabited expect for the wild horses and Lighthouse:D Great for camping, you have the ocean breaks on one side and the calm waters inside the hook on the other. Been going there for years mostly on sailboats and then camping, but I know people who take ATV's and such out there as well on the ferrys. Definitely worth it!

Nope we are going to rent a house. They are way cheap during the off season. We have been going down there for Turkey day week for quite a few years now (at least when I was in the country). The weather is hit or miss but we've been lucky as only maybe one or two trips in 12 or so years was really cold. Great fishing that time of year too. We are probably going to rent a place around Hatteras this year. Let me know what you guys are doing maybe we can all get together. The only wheeling is beach driving that I know of.

Cheers,

Mike

If you decide to go down there you should let me know, its only a three hour drive for me. Wouldn't mind meeting up with another rover down there.

Not only Corolla, but also Shackleford Banks has marsh ponies (and Assateague Island up in Virginia). I've camped at Oregon Inlet before, had a good time. Also taken the ferry over from Harkers to Lookout, neat place too.

Thing about the Banks.... I love it because it had a different feel than Myrtle. However, it's a long skinny highway runnin' along the barrier islands... it's hard to get very far off of the highway. Kitty Hawk / Kill Devil Hills is much more developed (go see the Lost Colony play if it's running when you're there, over on Roanoke Island). It thins out a bit towards Buxton (around Bodie usually isn't too crowded (oh, and say it 'body', not 'bow-dee')). North of KH/KDH, towards Duck, it gets into more of a high-rent district, but is nice for it. If you get on down past Hatteras, to Okracoke, it's nice, relaxed.... more popular now than ever, but, logistics keeps the traffic down a little. (I usually came up from Cedar Island instead of down from Elizabeth City).

[My father-in-law grew up in New Bern, spent a lot of time w/ his sister and father around the area. Also, spent a lot of time in LeJeune, Cherry Point, etc., so, I usually fled from Jacksonville, headed towards places like Oriental and Morehead City....]

I need to get back out there....... it's been too long.....

We get a house down there for Thanksgiving week too. Maybe we can meet up, though I'm not bringing my 8 mpg getting disco down there.
