Camping Trailers

Does anyone have any experience with any of the off-road camping trailers?? I once saw the Safari Trailers, which I liked, but it appears they are no longer in business. So I would appreciate any information or suggestions based on your experiences. Thanks, Bill

There was a guy at MAR selling these things. I can't remember the name of the company, but he is out of Georgia. Prices started at something like 7500.00. Pretty cool set-up, but crazy expensive..... I'll look in some of my old stuff from MAR and see if I still have anything on the trailers.

In October, he said he had 10 left, and thet the exchange rate from where he was getting them was going up, so it would be a while before he got more. I bet he still has 10 of them....

he said Homeland Security was buying them up to use for mobile command posts. Funny, I can't find ANY disbursements that went to him or his company though. The mobile command posts being purchased for local CERT etc are all coming from DRMO.

I plan on building a rack to go on top of mine to mount some sort of roof top tent like a Hannable or similar. Pics are in general section under "out of control trailer project"

Would be interested in selling it if money was right :D

That is a damn nice trailer, but if I am going to spend the night in a tent, its not gonna be a 13k tent.

I've kicked around the idea of building a teardrop trailer. Put a rack on top for bikes or a canoe. Nothing fancy but build it with a stronger frame and axle with off highway use in mind. Here's a link to a guy that built one for camping down in Mexico. http://www.outbackteardrop.com/

Cost on the Starcraft 11RT

bri said:
How much for one of those starcraft?

I actually own the one that Spydrjon is talking about we paid just over $10k for it but because it has a toilett and a shower it is tax deductable as a second home. The 10RT series I think starts at around $7k and has a GVWR of 2550 pounds which should be towable by a Disco or a Rangy. The main difference between the 10RT and the 11RT is the toilett shower and the front cargo space. We absolutely love ours. Fleetwood has a series similar to the Starcraft http://www.fleetwoodrv.com/evolution/ but of course I am partial to the starcraft :D

'Have you hugged a goat today?'

Garrett,

Love your sig. Not sure why, but I do.

Not a goat, but a jackass (or mule? Can't ever remember the difference) and spydrjon.

my girlfriend runs an organic beef farm. along with chickens (in two weeks) and a few dairy cows as pets/own use.
the horses of course are for our pleasure. she has three thoroughbreds and i have one.

if you could make a real living at this it would be fun. :)

I have a 2005 Evolution and so far, I really like it. The options can inflate the price quite a bit, so shop carefully and determine what features you definately need. I went ahead and got it loaded with everything including an air conditioner, furnace, hot water etc. The main reason I didn't go with the Starcraft is because the Evo fits in a standard garage and the Starcraft I looked at was too long, even though the same livable space. Both had a deck for transporting a motorcycle and/or generator and keg.

Evo vs Starcraft

syoung,

I know the feeling about being able to fit in the garage. When we bought ours we had a place to store it for free, But now we are having to park it in the backyard. Haven't tried to park it in our garage yet but acording to measurements it should fit with an inch or two to spare. It will be a tight fit if it does fit. We didn't see the Evo till after we bought ours and really liked it but it didn't have the bathroom that the wifey wanted but the yellow was very apealing to her. How does it tow for you and are you towing it with a rover? That is the main reason we don't have a rover yet. Would love to see some pics of your Evo in action.

I have a few pics from this weekend- we opened it up and played with it a bit. It tows well, but although it claims to be the same weight as my last trailer- it sure seems heavy. I've used my Freelander to move it around and it does ok, but any time it's going anywhere it's behind the 04 DII. I'm thinking my D1 would do ok, but it would be a lot of work on hills. The Evo has brakes though- a nice feature that the last one didn't have.

There's no toilet in it, although there is a cabinet where a porta-poo would fit at the expense of quite a bit of storage. All the trailers we looked at with internal showers/poopers sacrificed too much interior space, making the trailer too long for what we wanted. Backyard storage wasn't a possibility for us- so the Evo (also called the Mojave for some strange reason) worked out the best for us. I'll dig up some pics.
