Can I pull the plug to rid the 3 Amigos...

I just went through this for months with my 04, and for once the dealer was right...I had my friends brake shop put on a new set of genuine LR pads and rotors replacing the aftermarket parts I had installed months earlier and all of the problems went away.

Why not just take it to a mechanic with the proper diagnostic tools and get it diagnosed and fixed properly? ABS is pretty reliable and effective (also used for TC), so I would fix it properly. Geez, I love it when people buy a high maintenance automobile, can't afford the repairs or are too cheap to repair it properly and then want to perform work-arounds to save money and reduce the functionality of the vehicle.

Just have the car fixed properly and quit dicking around with it.

We just bought the Rover used, we really didn't have the extra 2G laying around to fix it...sorry about offending you but really...you didn't HAVE to read the thread.
For those of you with something constructive to say...I just wanted to update this and let you know that we did end up saving the money and had to have the entire valve replaced...and haven't seen the amigos again. Unfortunately, seems like Land Rover is all too aware of the problem yet there is no recall and no solice other than to fork over your money. I like the Rover...this situation just shows the typical car company mentality which is to not stand behind their product every chance they get. Those of you with the 3 amigos...good luck!

I had the same three lights on my '99 DII and I bought a used modulator from Will T, swapped it out, and voila, away they went. They returned about 6 months later. I then purchased the modulator repair kit from AB, swapped it out of my original modulator, replaced it, had the system reset via Testbook, and haven't had an issue yet (going on 6 months now)...FWIW

I did have something constructive to say. You just disagreed with it, which is fine. Hind sight is 20/20, but you should have bought an extended warranty with it. At least you should have known that you were buying a somewhat high maintenance vehicle and have the funds to fix it.

ABS is a pretty basic function that needs to function correctly...especially where you live, given the bad weather. $2k for that safety feature is worth it to me and my family.

Alas, I too am having the 3 amigos problems. On sometimes. Off others. Will come on if I really slam on the breaks hard. If anyone has "pulled the plug" and defeated the amigos, then I would love to hear about it.

Oh, you did have something constructive to say. I thought you were just being a dick.

Until one day you're coming up to a stop sign and hit a pothole or bump, then you ABS yourself out into the intersection.

The Disco ABS can be dangerous even when working properly. The question is, which scenario are you most worried about. At least in the rain you can slow down, but if that overly-sensitive ABS kicks in at an intersection, you're an instant t-bone.

:bigok:

While I keep ABS on and in a perfectly working condition when I'm on pavement, I am yet to come across a single instance when ABS would've done a better braking job. That includes infamous SoCal early-season rains when the well-oiled highways become very slick.

NZDisco - there's nothing simple about friction physics.

Now I'm relatively new to Land Rover, but the general principle behind ABS is that it firstly allows you to control the vehicle by preventing wheel-lockup. Secondly, it reduces stopping distances. Basic physics, search wikipediea etc for further explanation...

I don't see how ABS coud throw you into oncoming traffic.

Well, James' comment was a bit over exaggerating. However, for what ever reason, DII ABS have a tendency to activate when you hit a sharp bump at low speeds. Actually, it is the traction control that starts functioning. So, when you're stopping normally at slow speeds, and the ABS activates, you actually lose some breaking ability due to the pulsating breaks. It is kind of awkward but doesn't throw you out in the intersection as if you lost your brakes completely.

Absolutely not. On my way to work there's a concrete plant, and damned concrete trucks beat up the pavement to pulp in the left turn lanes. I've long since learned to slow down from way back, just so I don't hit that patch with too much brakes. ABS will put you right in the middle of intersection if you hit the brakes hard enough to activate it.

So spend the $2k and take the arrogance elsewhere, dude. Doesn't sound like you're in need of any help from this site for your "his & hers" matched pair anyway

You actually dug up a 6 month old thread just to say this?

Rowdy, I also have had the three amigo's for two years now. What is really keeping me from diving into the repair project is the fact that no matter what I choose to repair, I must still have the ABS codes cleared to reset the system... I know for a fact that there is no indy shop in Montana that has a code reader that will talk to the LR SLABS. I took my rig to SLC to have the problem diagnosed. The results were that I have a wheel speed sensor on the passenger front and drivers rear that were bad. LR SLC recomended replacing both hub assemblies.
