I can't see the pic you linked, but if it is under the driver side door it is where the compressor for air suspension would be I believe...

I think this is the tray you speak of but I haven't a clue as to what it is for.

Thanks guys, you really can't see my pic?
D*&^it to h$ll!

anyway, I was looking at it today, and I thought that the dimentions looked familiar, so i stuck a .50 cal. ammo can in there, and it fits perfectly!

The only modification I need to perform before I mount the can permanently is to trim the hasp-lever that locks the can lid down, and I'll have a place to store my muddy, rust-plated 20' recovery chain.

pics to come once I figure out how to post the d&^n things.

Sorry! I don't have any pics of rusty chain or an ammo can.

P.S. When you get stuck stuck that little tray will be buried in the shit. If you can crawl under there you probably aren't stuck.

That's ok, I appreciate the help anyway!

You have made a very good point, maybe I'll stick some oil and brake fluid in there instead.

I relocated my washer reservoir to this location once I found out the continuum transfunctioner was not part of my 04 d2; rte bumpers leave the bottle exposed

Well, I got some help with pic-posting (not gonna say who, incase they don't want to be seen as "soft" on the newbies!)

This is the can in the tray, a perfect fit:

This shows the part of the hasp that needs trimming:

I don't even need the extra storage, I just love putzing with the Rover! :)

nice!, now what type of box is that and where did ya get it?

It's a U.S. military surplus ammunition can. This is the larger of the two most commonly found ones, it was made to hold .50 caliber ammo - thus .50 cal. can. The smaller ones I have are for .30 caliber ammo, they would probably fit too, but are about half the width, so don't offer much storage. You can find them at any Army/Navy store, gun shows or even some websites like Cheeper Than Dirt - actually there's one on the linked page. $7.97 is not a bad price either!

They are rock solid and have a rubber gasket around the lid, so they are waterproof when closed.

After I trim the hasp and paint the can black, I will remove the carry handle (shown in the pics) so it doesn't rattle while driving.

The plan is to mount it by drilling two holes facing the bottom of the tray, run two hex-head bolts through them, attach 1" washers under the exposed slot of the tray, bolt on the nuts and seal the assembly with some black silicone to preserve water-tightness.

:)

I've thought about putting a pelican down there several times. Never bothered to do it though. I still think it's a good idea. It's a nice little bracket under there. I even considered mounting an air tank for the compressor there, or even a small compressor, mounted in a pelican. I still haven't decided precisely what I'm going to do. I'll be putting some sort of box there I'm sure, but I'll never get around to it.:D Even considered mounting a little secondary water tank for emergency use.

Cheers,

Kennith

Also be careful what you put under there. A guy I went wheeling with crushed the pump that he still had in there on a rock. A vulnerable spot.
