Can the check engine light turn off by itself?

I was wondering if the check engine light can turn off on its own accord or if the only way is to manually reset it. I have had a check engine light on forever and after doing alot of things to fix the problem the light started going off by itself. I keep having a cylinder misfire but neither us or the shop know how to really fix it. Recently we replaced the the plugs and wires which is when the light started turning off but maybe the bulb is just burnt out.

Technically I believe yes the light can turn itself out. The computer needs to see something like two completely trouble free drive cycles to satisfy ODBII.

I think misfires only light it intermittently anyway unless they get real bad or there is another problem.

You may have fixed your issue, have the codes read.

When you crank the engine, the check engine light should come on for about 3 - 5 seconds as a check.
Crank the engine and take a look. If you don't see it, chances are good the bulb is dead.:victory:

Does the light come on for a few at startup? When the key is first turned on?

I've seen 'em reset themselves after a repair, not on my Rover, but on fiords.

could be a number of things but if the truck is running ok, keep driving it. They do eventually reset themselves if there is nothing wrong.

Well the bulb is not burnt out so everything seems good. I have had the check engine light on for as long as I can remember. First it was an unbent pin on a sensor and something with the stepper motor. Then, I was getting emissions so I replaced the cats with the muffler while I was at it.

Now its been like a cylinder 4 misfire with another code just saying "ecu fail or random cylinder misfire" or something like that so replaced the plugs and wires. Cylinder 4 plug was pretty bad and the plug wire going to it was stretched beyond belief so had NAPA steal a longer one of the same style.

The codes been going on and off by itself but I bought a Innova OBDII scanner that can read all the diagnostics and freeze frame when it reports a misfire as well as do O2 sensor tests. I havent gotten to really use that because the the only time it got a freeze frame was when the thing could read Land Rover codes. I cleared the ecu, updated the reader but lights been off so Im happy. I still have an ABS light on though.
