Can we ditch the stock D2 radiator...

And go to something a little bit more reliable, not to mention of better quality? Jegs has "generic" radiators for American V8s for $170 that aren't made of plastic and recycled soda cans. Has anyone tried to use a different radiator brand rather than use a stock LR POS? Surely there must be someone out there with more time than money who has tried this before!%#

his point is that they break easily and he implies that they are made poorly. i've wondered the same about disco I radiators

true that DI rads are more reliable and better built that DII rads. DII rads are plastic where the DIs are metal. the replacement cost is in line with this. $250+ for a DII and $500 for a DI.

have seen several DIIs split and leak along the plastic seam on the ends.

the issues with the DI rads is that they might need recoring. but rarely do they physically break.

I think the DII I just bought has an aftermarket radiator on it. But I am not for sure, let me post a picture, and let you see. I know there is no plastic cover over everything, and it just doesn't look right. Give me a few minutes! I can tell you it runs midway temp(is that right?), my DI runs below midway!

I'm on my third D2 radiator. First was defective, fixed under warranty, second one I broke (plastic side piece) while trying to re-seat it into the little rubber grommets down low. This third one has been trouble-free so far, but I agree, they're fragile compared to others I've seen.

The problem with D2 rads, apart from what all you say, is that it's difficult to find an aftermarket suitable one, 'cause they have (depending on model year) one or two sensors in the plastic tanks (one is the Thermostat surveillance sensor and the other one is for NAS vehicle). Should anybody find a suitable alternative, we all would be very glad to hear from it.

I'm on my second radiator, so far.

I replaced the radiator in my 99 DII and got the one WITH the sensor cuz it was cheaper and the guy told me I could just not connect it at the other end. Well, they didn't include the god damn sensor thing and I forgot about it and filled up with fluid... It started to spill out everywhere and I was cursing the car when I realized the sensor plug was leaking out the fluid. What can I plug it with if the dealer screws me over on the sensor????

PS Why is the one WITH the sensor cheaper than the one WITHOUT?
