A Carfax report would be a good start. The dealer could tell if the truck has had all of its scheduled maintenance done (and mileage recorded).

It's a 1997 and I bought it with 37,000 on the odometer. The numbers line up which I was told is one sign but the tumblers in the ignition are worn and starting to stick. I would think this should happen on a vehicle with more miles on it but maybe not. The rest of the vehicle is mint with only drivers seat worn. The guy I bought it from said he has 7 vehicles that he spread out the driving on hence low miles. The tires were dry rotted but were perfect shape. Maybe I'm just being paraniod.

First thing I would look for when I got one like this was if the screws for the dash have been removed. Screwdrivers always leave marks when working on black screws.

Next, we took the speedometer out and examined for evidence of anything. Mileage can be set LEGALLY in some instances and can be done well. But that takes practice, and most people dont have that practice However, its best to have it at a speedometer shop because they will be able to notice things that someone who isnt as familar will. Also, we videotaped the entire process as evidence in a court case.

For example, in Wisconsin, when I was involved. If the Odometer was tampered, the car buyer was able to sue for 3 times the amount of purchase. So, its a big deal.

The new Digital ones are VERY tough to tamper without expensive machinery.

Seat was worn with 37K? Was the owner a comeplete fat ass? This all sounds funny to me.

Replacement motor? My '97 shows 61K miles on the odometer. But the truck has just over 101k miles. The previous owner was forthright and honest. He even came down another $300 (without me asking) because it didn't have a clean Carfax report.

I wish I had the coin to pursue this legally if I find anything but I spent it on buying the damn thing :banghead:

Also I'm the third owner and not to have more miles. Maybe it was a lease vehicle for the first owner and the guy I got it from just never drove it. I think I'll just stop thinking about it and enjoy it. Right after my new alt. comes in ;)

That is illegal.

The Odometer is to represent the mileage on the FRAME, not engine.

Then maybe I should report Land Rover dealer that did the replacement. The motor was a warranty replacement at just around 40k miles. There is some paperwork included with the truck regarding the new odometer setting.

The only time it is legal to change the mileage is

1) The car is 1969 or older (Thats when it became illegal to spin them)

2) The frame has been replaced (RARE! Sometimes in resorations, but super rare)

3) You are replacing a failed odometer, and you are setting the new one to match the old one.

If the dealership changed the mileage of your truck, they broke the law. If they installed a new ODO because the one in the truck wasnt working, it could be legal. They are required to put a label on the truck stating the mileage of the removed odometer and the mileage of the new one.

That started happening at about 140,000 for me, on a '96....

Maybe they mean if the odometer has been replaced.

-STATUTE-
(a) Adjusting Mileage. - A person may service, repair, or replace
an odometer of a motor vehicle if the mileage registered by the
odometer remains the same as before the service, repair, or
replacement. If the mileage cannot remain the same -
(1) the person shall adjust the odometer to read zero; and
(2) the owner of the vehicle or agent of the owner shall attach
a written notice to the left door frame of the vehicle specifying
the mileage before the service, repair, or replacement and the
date of the service, repair, or replacement.

(b) Removing or Altering Notice. - A person may not, with intent
to defraud, remove or alter a notice attached to a motor vehicle as
required by this section.

Talked to a guy at a odometer shop and he said that it would be really hard to tell unless someone really hacked it up.

Carfax is a load crap. Long story short ran one on wife's new car and it listed 3 red flags on it. How does a new car with 10 miles on it right off the showroom floor have things wrong with it. I also ran one on this rover which after some phone calls/searching proved it to be wrong. Called CT department of motor vehicles and they said it's a good way for them to make money.

I've come to the conclusion that I have a very clean looking disco that I have always wanted. It's very clean for 37k never mind 137k. He would have had to replace entire interior for it to look this good.

look at the sellers to give you an idea of what has happened. Around where I live there are D1s with under 50k because they are mall hoppers and everything is within 5 miles, also have coin so they are fine spending money to keep things nice.
