Seals do work against this cylindric rectified surface. Problem is not the easy-to-see groove, but a microscopic edge produced by previous seal's lip. With just a 600 grit sandpaper by turning the piece you can "kill" that edge and there are no surprises later. This procedure is a must every time we change a seal without discarding the ground part. If not, that edge will cut the lip of the new seal in the first turns.
