My DII is sitting around alot these days. I might only put 2k per year on her now. How often should I change the oil? Using Mobile 1 synthetic.

The rule of thumb is every 3k miles or 3 months.
do you know where "rule of thumb" comes from?

the contaminates of the oil become corrosive. take some bare steel, pour some old oil on a bit of it and leave it in a moist enviroment. you would be surprised how fast the oiled part starts to rust. have you ever heard of someone saying their engine blew up because they changed the oil too often?

oil does not go bad from sitting

the oil companies are the ones saying 3 mos or 3k

following either is just frigging stupid

i change every 3K as habit. i never change based on amount of time it spent sitting. i only drive about 3K every 4-6 months nowadays. used to be 10K a year...

what do you suggest then?

on dino 5000 miles pretty easy

on synthetic 7500 without batting a eyelash.

I know a number of car collectors that have the same oil in cars for years because the cars drive limited miles and there really isnt any reason why that would be a problem because its pretty clean oil.

leaving real dirty oil in a car when it sits is much more of a issue as the compounds that you have to worry about are a product of dirty used oil not new clean oil.

the oil itself doesn't go bad, but moisture collection and bacteria growth does happen

6 months would be my limit for the engine oil, but mine gets parked under a tree while serious car collectors have climate controlled garages.

Sitting Moisture is your worst enemy.

My Z car sits in a semi climate controlled garage, same oil in sump for 2 years, less than 1000 miles

Synth only, dino is a no no for longer term, acids are bad

So the real dilemma here is wether it is worth using synthetic ? I hate to spend the extra cash and only getting 1K worth of miles out of it.

Thanks.

I would rather spend the extra $30 on synthetic to have the peace of mind in letting my multiple thousand dollar investment run smoothly when I do need it.
To me, it seems like cheap insurance...

I change the oil in mine every Christmas. Thats about 2k miles on dino oil. However, I do start it and let it run for about 20 min. about twice a month.

Im not saying everyone should do this, however it works for me. I have another car that I have been doing this with for 13 years and have never had any problems.

On a side note..... I run the green Marine Sta-Bil in everything except my daily drivers. This ethonol stuff is bad on anything rubber. The marine stuff has better corrosion fighters. Just thought id toss that out there.
