I am going to be starting to build storage in the back of my range rover to have more room. I have got few things from work today to start working on it. I'll be using wood here's the sizes that I'll be working with 2x12, 2x4, and 1x4. The plans are for it is to cover my spare tire, but still have access to the spare tire. Also well be having storage for tow chain, first aid kit, emergency road side kit, all fluids and tool box. I well be posting pics as i go. Also well be using plywood for the top.

I am currently planning the same type of project for my 110. My biggest concern is the weight. Very interested to see how you progress. I scored some 54" rails that are rated at 100 lbs at full length for a drawer type affair.

I am going to be starting to build storage in the back of my range rover to have more room.

I don't see how installing several board-feet of lumber in the back of your Range Rover is going to create more room. Adding that material will actually reduce storage space available for other things. It will increase organization and access depending on how it's designed but at a cost of lost volume and added weight. There are other materials available that achieve the same purpose with fewer tradeoffs, but it's hard to beat lumber for price.

before i did this i had a big black box and then my spare tire took up alot of room in the back this is why i did it this way i can set stuff on top of it like camping gear, fishing gear, and hunting gear. this way most of my stuff wont get smashed up by the big box and the spare tire and all together i only put in close to 50 into it paid 20 for the 2x12s, 2x4s, and 1x4s. the plywood was giving to me and the rest of the 50 was on hardware

If you travel with an ARB fridge, you need the space for it which unfortunately something like this takes away. As we seem to always take alot of stuff with us, I end up using every nook and cranny for packing items.

What do you mean by this what other things are you talking about

Organization for off-pavement travel is a balancing act at best.

Any storage solution you create immediately reduces the volume of the cargo area. If, for example, you use a single 8 foot 2X4 in the construction of your storage solution, you will have removed nearly 1/2ft3 from the previously available volume.

That is roughly the equivalent of being forced to carry the entire Miami Vice DVD box set wherever you go.

That's only a single 2X4 and look what it's done to your cargo capacity. Consider in the same manner every single piece of lumber you used; every part, from brackets to drawer bottoms. It adds the hell up very quickly.

Also, you've now changed the shape of the cargo area, and redistributed it's volume within compartments.

The total volume of your storage solution is removed from that of your cargo area. Large items you may have previously transported will no longer fit in the vehicle.

Additionally, the materials used have determined the maximum volume inside that storage solution; which you mean to divide further. Fat lot of good drawers are, if each can only hold a few screwdrivers.

This is why thinner, more advanced, or higher quality materials are desirable.

Everything you do eats space and adds weight.

The sole purpose of such a creation should be to encourage easy access and isolation of certain equipment; increasing safety in the process.

Kennith

clearly pple dont read all of the posts here

compared to other threads on this forum, this one is a "baby".

folks here will read pages upon pages on a thread so don't be too quick to judge.

in general you may be gaining some organizational attributes with your system, yet, overal you are losing actual storage space.

if your stuff still fits, then it works and meets your needs.

my needs are different as I carry a fridge which just into itself takes a fair amount of available space.

let's face it - the cargo area in a RRC isn't all that plentiful and the sloping rear window doesn't help.

that coupled with the rear seat angle the actual useable space is tight.

we travel with 2 Labs so the rear seat is in use.

I just accept the fact that for us, a Brownchurch is required whenever we go on extended trips and packing the cargo area becomes an art to distribute all the various sized items.

If it works for you then great. Blue & Kennith are just offering constructive criticism.
The only thing I would suggest it to modify that rear 2x12 so you can access the spare & jack without having to unload all your gear that will be on top.

Im actually getting ready to start my storage project. I have removed the back seats as I rarely carry more than one passenger and the dog.
My system will be composed of two separate boxes. One goes where the back seats used to be and will have two sides that open from the top. The rear will be a typical drawer system.
Ive taken weight into consideration and the back seats alone weigh in at about 120 lbs, so Im hoping to have it weigh about the same of less.
Im using 1/4 MDF with metal corner brackets for extra support. I also plan on sealing the wood to prevent water damage. Ill finish it up with marine carpet.

For me, I dont need more storage, I just need better storage. I go camping/wheeling every two weeks so to me its worth having everything in the truck and organized all the time. It will also give me enough room to be able to sleep in the back.

Let the man put whatever he wants to in the back of his truck. Damn! What's the purpose in all the "critique"?

I use dead hookers and small Asian boys to organize my trucks.

The guy came on here and posted up his creation. He started the discussion. He should assume that other people would have different opinions. The criticisms posted seemed relatively objective and weren't personal attacks.

It's very simple; if you don't want criticism of any sort, don't create a thread about your creation.

Right now in my garage I'm building a cargo box / floor for my Disco. Frankly, I don't give a flying fuck what anybody thinks of it so I won't be creating a build thread. Let's face it, when people post pictures of their creations they do it for one reason: the internet back slap.
