Can you have a bad cat with no CEL. I have a fairly loud knock that seems to be from the drivers side cat (I took a listen with a mechanic stethoscope). I have never had a CEL from exhaust issues. 146k, just had the back half of the exhaust replaced.

Acceleration is a bit doggy, but I cant say that anything is causing that except that its a Disco.

I am thinking of using some universal Cats recommended in the tech section to do the replacement, but I want to make sure that I am on the right track. I am thinking bad cat with no CEL.....

Yes. The GEMS engine management system is certainly far from sensitive, in my experience. I had a cat start coming apart and go bad on a 1996 D1 I used to own, and never got a code.

Well that is good news. I have read a lot of posts on here about CEL's and Cats going bad vs. a couple of other tick gremlins. It sounds like a lot of people put some coin into chasing ticks and I didnt want to fall into that trap, yet...

I just had to verify that a cat could rattle that much without throwing a code.

I'd cut off your stock ones and sell them on CL. I got $120 for the pair, with one busted up. I then went and bought two new high flow cats for a little over $40 each. I gained a bit of power and MPG's in the process.

Link to source where you bought these, please.

FYI. I just received a quote of $80 to $120 per Cat for originals from a guy that buys them for recycling. I think I priced the magnaflows for about $90.00 per side.

It strikes me as odd that the offered price for your used cats is close to, or higher than, the retail price of new ones. I'm not suggesting there's something fishy about it, just weird that new ones cost about the same or less than what you get for selling your old ones. If the materials in the cats are that valuable why are new ones not more expensive?

I think the old ones had some sort of precious metal in them, Platinum maybe? And the new ones do not, I believe.

Did you get those headers and exhaust in? Gain 10 HP?

One of my cats is rattling like hell and it's driving me crazy. Pretty sure part of it ended up in my old muffler. So Magnaflow hi-flow cats are the general consensus? Best price?

I think you are right about the platinum. Hence the stories of meth heads chopping cats off cars. If newer cats do not contain platinum then it makes sense that they would be cheaper. I'd better replace mine and sell the old ones before someone beats me to it.

My CATs were shattered and never caused any codes. Just cut them out and weld a piece of pipe in or have a shop do it.

Haven't got the exhaust yet. I'm hoping for a gain of at least 15hp and 2mpg. :D

The alternative method to the stop the pump is to not stock it. The closest gas station to me has not had Premium the last two times I went to fill. He said that demand has decreased....Did know they could do that.

There has been a lot of news stories about people with SUV's loosing their Cats would be crack heads. The higher the vehicle the easier access. I must admit that the guy that will "buy my cats for top dollar" had an add on Backpages and only a phone number to text info to. Yes it is strange. I will try to look into it more, but he did specifically ask if my cats were originals not new universals, so I think Brett is right. More of the good stuff in the old ones.

Long and short for me is that if I can get rid of the old and put new in for the same price or better, even if my cats arnt bad at this point, I might as well try to stop that rattle that is pissing me off.
