catalytic converter?

99 Series l Disco. 100k. Funny sound - like an exhaust leak. Smells like a burning wire or oil. Been told it may need a new catalytic converter. Anybody got any ideas? Thanks.

Do you hear a rattling noise from the cats? Take a garden hose and tap the exhaust system. If you hear "marbles in a coke can"..Then it will most likely be broken cats. As far as the burning smell where exactly is that coming from? Under the hood presume?

The smell seems to be coming from under the cab.

Could be rear main seal dripping and blowing back over the cats.

did you just get an oil change by any chance? whenever I lube my driveshafts I get the grease burning smell--driveshafts, especially the front fling excess grease on to the exhaust.
