Cats stolen on the streets of NYC

Bummer, maybe get some aftermarket ones as they are less expensive and less likely to be stolen. 25 percent might get you close. Salvage catalytic converter prices are way down. But, I guess they are still high enough to make thieves still want them.

Feel bad for you. One cat was stolen out of my D1 in front of my house - since then I've tried to make sheetmetal shields that need to be hacked off to retrieve a converter. Not a protection, more of a deterrent: more work, more noise, and for me - far more likely that my Airedale makes me get off my backside. He did bark up a storm when these fuckers came to my D1, I just ignored it.

it gets worse. Despite comprehensive coverage, GEICO will only cover 25% due ro mileage (155k) and NY has barred sales of non- CARB cats.

May be a “total loss” situation depending on how they evaluate current value vs scrap.

I hate insurance cos

As for the ban on non-CARB cats, State of New York, or New York City.

A “total loss” means the insurance co pays our max allowable whether or not that satisfies the cost of the repair.

The calculation is something like…

assessed market value - scrap value = max pay out (and I keep the vehicle)

oddly, this method of settlement is not subject to the mileage “discount”.

It is pretty stupid but I think I will walk away with enough to cover the repair but a “stain” on the CARFAX.

Damn that sucks! File and try to get whatever you can out of the insurance..

Meanwhile, Order this for 470$ and slap it in yourself or pay a shop 100$ to do it and go on your merry way.

Invest in a shotgun and listen to your Dog, he is smarter than you think! He knew someone was messing around with a Cat!

Sorry to hear that, Walt. It's like a kick in the gut after all the work you've put into that P38.

It may cost me a couple of bucks, but it will be fine. Timing is inconvenient and logistics are a bitch. Between GEICO, towing, and a shop to do the repairs, it is complicated. Getting a complete understanding of the costs and ramifications of coverage/pay out options is a real learning process.

Word to all with higher mileage vehicles.... you may not actually have complete coverage for cat theft. Check your policy.

Have you checked your home owners or renters insurance? They will cover stuff.

As for the ban on non-CARB cats, State of New York, or New York City.
Vendors are excluded from shipping non-CARB catalysts into New York State. (NYC not involved) AB won't ship non-CARB units to a New York address.

Here are the approximate figures...

Option 1: replacement of catalysts

Allowance for catalysts $ 3,500
"depreciation discount" 75%
What GEICO will pay: .25 x 3,500 = $875 Note: For GEICO to pay, the work needs to be done by a licensed shop using CARB-compliant catalysts. Shops will want something on the order of $2,000-2,500 for parts + labor. No bueno.

Option 2: Total loss
GEICO evaluates the vehicle and a pricing service generates a "fair market value". I am expecting a low ball.
GEICO goes to market and requests bids for "retention value'. Basically what a breaker or scrap yard would pay

Fair market value - Retention value (scrap) - deductible ($ 100) = max payout on a total loss event.
I'm hopeful this option makes sense.

Funny thing is that I believe the cats on my D1 are near the end of their useful lives. I need to explore the 'trade in value' of the old cats. It may fund the purchase of a new system.

On my 96 D1 I received a quote from RRCATS last week for just over $200 for the pair. Less than a year ago they gave me just over $400 for a pair pulled from my other 96. Scrap prices for cats have come way down… but the prices for new ones have not come down. Typical inflation… relatively short term conditions jack prices up. Those conditions resolve and production costs drop but retail prices stay up.

I read an article discussing the drop in wholesale scrap prices that was directed to the scrap industry buyers who then sell to processors. The advice for the buyers is to hold onto their stockpiles if they can until prices rebound.

I just looked at magnaflow‘s website. They are offering 20% off now if you submit your email address. i assume it applies to catalytic converters.

I had this happen to my D2 years ago while at dinner in a nice part of Atlanta. Really heated me. I installed a Magnaflow y pipe and never went back to the restaurant.

Local regulations have you in a pickle. Can you not find a used good factory P38 y-pipe?

How much do you like the truck? If you really want to keep it, and can't find CARB cats, consider shipping it to a shop in a neighboring state that will install non-CARB y-pipes. I'd imagine someone makes a reasonable CARB y-pipe or cats though.

I don't know about New York, but in most south eastern states if you go the total loss route you end up with a salvage title. Even if you go through the trouble of repairing and having it inspected to obtain a rebuilt title, the truck will be worth scrap to most buyers.

I just sold two D1 cats to rrcats.com for 413$. I just had to box and send them out. We put aftermarket cats in ourselves and actually made money. The date was 5/16/23. That’s crazy that two months later they are 200. Same company! If I was in ur shoes I’d buy a y pipe and install it myself. Or if u can weld, weld in some cheapies and drop the insurance claim.
