CE Light comes on during Idle

I have a problem that started about 2 weeks ago. My check engine light comes on whenever I idle for long period of time. It will go off that same day but will come back the next time. I don't have a reader and it never is on long enough to take it and get read. Anyone have any ideas as to what this could be?

Thanks
Paul

Could be insufficient pressure in the coolant system -- I seem to remember Rover saying in the owner's manual not to let the engine warm up or idle for long periods of time. If it's doing it often, though, you should check your coolant level just to be on the safe side.

I tried at the local Pepboys and they wanted $80 for it.

The truck is already warm. It happens if I run in the post office for a minute or two. I will check the coolant level though.

I dont think it is coolant related because, if I am not mistaking, there is a seperate light that monitors coolant levels, but nothing that monitors coolant pressure, since coolant pressures change during WOT/Closed Loop cycles. Honestly, it can be a multitude of things. You NEED to go to AutoZone and get a FREE OBDII scan. Once you have the code, you can know exactly what it is. My guess is that it is EGR related since you said it only does it during closed loop.

Everbody should own an OBDII scanner. GO GET ONE. THEIR CHEAP!

Yea all you have to do is pull up to auto zone and ask for a scan, i know the guys there pretty good so they even clear them for me.

You can buy a code reader for not much more than that. Good tool to have on-hand. I bought the Innova Equus 6100 a couple months ago: $130 with a $30 rebate. You can find them on eBay for <$100. Plus this one is generic so it will work on other vehicles.

Knowing the codes will go a long way to getting you fixed up.

I know I need to get a reader and I know I should get it read. I stated in my first post that the CE light is not on long enough. Once I start driving it will shut off in a few moments. I just thought maybe someone has ran into this problem before!

There may still be a pending code in there.
