changing out carpets

Living in Canada we get snow and with snow comes salt. Last night I was looking down at my floor mats and they were wearing a wee thin and the carpet is full of crusted salt. Was thinking about taking the carpet down and putting in some nice rubber instead.
Anyone thought of doing this or have done this? or is this just plain stupid...

I prefer the rubber mats over the factory carpet I have had to replace the drivers mat but the carpet underneath is still in very good condition salt and all.
