Misfire in cylinder #4 and general ignition misfire. Has anyone figured out exactly what is causing these ? I've changed my fuel filter and spark plugs and will be changing my plug wires soon. Anyone have any idea what causes these codes to be thrown ? Also, during cold startup, the car runs rough for about 1 min then smooths out. Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

1316 is multiple misfires causing catalyst damage, & 0300 is general misfires. Both are caused by either ignition system faults (coils, wires, plugs) or by valve stick. Use a standard cheap spark tester for ignition problems. If you don't find any, hook a vacuum gauge to the intake & take a test drive. Put it in 2, rev up to ~3700RPM & then bump it into D. Immediately try to hold 5" of vacuum, but don't work the pedal any more than you have to. If the needle is wandering, or bouncing, you have valve stick and need the valve stems knurled (rebuild the heads).

Steve - Nice man, 'preciate the help. I'll give it a shot. I may just get the damn heads rebuilt to be on the safe side. I know I've got coolant going somewhere, but I have no leaks. May be a bad head gasket, but the plugs all look fine. Oh the joys of the Rover V8 ;) Thanks again man.

I had the same problem with my 1998 Discovery 4.0 after doing a complete tune-up (new plugs, ignition wires, air filter and fuel filter). I had used Bosch Platinum 4 spark plugs in my 1995 Range Rover Classic 3.9 with no problems, so I gave them a try in the Discovery. The dealership told me that 4.0 engine management system does put out misfire codes when using these spark plugs, and that using the original specification Champion spark plug is the solution. I was skeptical, so I also talked with a few independent Land Rover repair shops, and they said the same thing. I put in the Champions in and there were no more problems.

Hope this helps.

Most LR head gasket leaks I've seen leak to the OUTSIDE; not into the cylinders. Of course, yours could be one of the few...
