Which chip????

It is very doubtfull that chipping alone will improve the performance of
your engine enough to bring it back to what it was.
When you put bigger tyres on you changed the overall gearing of the
drivetrain, so that is where you have to make your modifications to gain
back the lost performance

Its the diesel td5 discos/Defenders that can be chipped very succesfully. (200bhp + is possible) not the v8's.

I have a PowerChip in my '99 D2. I can't say it was a kick in the pants, but it definitely changed the acceleration characteristics, shift points are higher and the engine "feels" like it revs more freely. A 4.6 D1 with stock gears and 33s will just slightly pull away from me.

fwiw, my last two tanks of gas, ~41 gallons, took me about 680 miles, only about 100 miles if hwy driving. Summer gas? Well-tuned V8? PowerChip? Acetone? I don't know.

'99 D2, ~110K miles, Amoco Premium, 33s, 4.11s, RTE 3" stuff, Warn 15K.

On Myth Busters they proved acetone will actually lower the gas mileage.
I had good luck with chipping BMW's. Of course I didn't buy the Disco to go fast.

Not in my case. Our well-tuned Protege (wife's car), over almost a 9 month period, shows about an 18% improvement (32-34mpg without up to 38-40mpg with), only around 10% hwy miles, generally running shit gas here from the local store.

On the D2, when doing hwy trips, I saw about 11% improvement over 7 long trips (Knoxville, St Augustine and Outerbanks). These numbers are based on my own records.

On my tractor (MF362), I just started collecting the numbers, after the first two tanks, it's already about 12% ahead (hours). I am not easy on the tractor.

ymmv...literally.

Davis Performance Landys in Aus does some good chips. I'm not sure what the figures are in hp and ft/lb, but the stocker TD5 makes 101kw and 315Nm. There are a stack of ECU upgrades as they continue to develop them, but gains are up to 142kw and 469Nm. I have a pile of his dyno graphs in front of me. If you do an intercooler upgrade also you can have 165kw and 520Nm which is the setup I run. Fuel economy is also unchanged from standard. You can go the full ECU upgrade with the intercooler also and it will give you 200kw and 520Nm but will ise more fuel.

The ECU upgrades are a replacement of the early type with a new chip in them, and the later type are just a reflash.

I would be thrilled to be corrected here, but from what I know of how 'chips' work, there's about as much chance of getting 50hp out of this engine as there is that pigs might fly.

The Mythbuster test was way improperly done...

Chip to get 50HP? Not on a petrol Rover... no way.

Had the exact same issue with my 00DII. Put in a chip from Powerchip. Noticed significant improvement in mid power band. Not amazing, but definately noticeable. Also added an NRP exhaust and changed the gear ratio to 4.11 to accomodate the larger tires. Then ported and polished the intake and exhaust while I was doing a head gasket. Still no rocket, but I can drive it in the mountains without getting passed by every 5th wheel on the road anymore.

sounds good! thanks for all your info guys.. It sounds like my best bet is to change my gear ratio instead of getting it chipped to get the power i lost, back. would that be a better idea..??? the cip sounded nice at first!!!! I WANT POWER! (i tow snowmobiles in the winter and hate getting past up on the hills!) 99 D2 2inch lift. 265's what sould i do?

I also put the Powerchip in my Disco II in 2003. Can't say that I noticed much of an improvement. Maybe got the power back that the larger tires took away. I also have ported heads, intake and exhaust manifolds. It feels ok. I am sure the ported heads would be a better improvement if I had a performance cam.

Ok Mike, I'm intrigued. How did you do this? Whats the ratio and what kind of acetone do you use?
Will it reset ABS faults?

I thought acetone would damage seal, gaskets, and fuel line. I've been curious about acetone for a while, but don't want to damage the truck. What kind of prep is needed? What kind of results should i expect?

Acetone is not something I'd run in a Rover V8.

The chip, however, is.

What I think the Land Rover chips are doing is giving us back what they took when they shipped them to America. I'll bet the chipped motors are cleaner inside, and have fever valve issues. I don't think anyone is getting 50 HP any time soon, though. Maby 10 or 15.

Cheers,

Kennith

i have the powerchip, 4.11's and 33's. the powerchip added 19hp and 23lb's of torque. the gearing made the biggest difference. the powerchip was noticable on the highway but not much around town.
before the 33's i had 265/75's and the power was outstanding, it had more power than the 4.6 in the RR. now it seems about the same.
