We'll see. When I started the experiment about a year ago, I put a bunch of fuel hose and rubber grommets in a jar of pure Acetone to see what would have. As of today, you can't see a much of anything but a jar full of clear liquid with some rubber parts in it.

In addition, there's a good chance I'll pull my motor in a couple of months, it will be interesting to see what the inside looks like. I've also run exclusively synth.

Here's a link with some of my initial experimentation on the Protege. It hasn't been updated in a long time, however, but there is some info on setup, etc.

i have the powerchip, 4.11's and 33's. the powerchip added 19hp and 23lb's of torque. the gearing made the biggest difference. the powerchip was noticable on the highway but not much around town.
before the 33's i had 265/75's and the power was outstanding, it had more power than the 4.6 in the RR. now it seems about the same.

It is the same. A D2 with 33s and 4.11s is exactly the same as a stock truck. A D2 with 265/75s and 4.11s is slightly quicker (lower gearing) than stock. A long time ago Kyle, DiscoDino, and others were debating this stuff round and round. Eventually, someone pulled out a calculator and did the math. You'll have to search to find the details.

with 33's and 4.11's i'm still geared lower than stock, although not much lower. it's been awhile since i did the math i think it was 2 or 3% lower.

....................there's about as much chance of getting 50hp out of this engine as there is that pigs might fly.

Trebuchet.
Now here's a mans hobby.

Generally, really big chip claims are related directly to boost pressure changes. I chipped my old Audi and it kicked ass. Cost around $600. I fixed the current one with a bolt in the wastegate hose and a cotter pin. Cost around 20 cents.

I have a STOCK D2 besides the 2in lift and the 265/75/16's.. what gears come stock on a 99 d2? it deffinatley feels way slower than the truck did without the lift and tires. how much does it cost to upgrade "gears" to make my truck run and tow like it used to??? thanks for all the info!!

go with the 3.9's unless you want to go to a larger tire later. it's $400 a set for gears plus installation, and a new rear driveshaft (or have your old shaft cut and have a universal joint and 4 bolt flange installed)
if you want lockers install them with the gears and it's a good idea to swap to heavy duty axles while you have it apart.

rpm's at 70 with 4.11's and 33's is 2336rpm
rpm's at 70 with 4.11 and 265/75 is 2447rpm
rpm's at 70 with 3.54 and stock tires is 2235rpm
rpm's at 70 with 3.54 and 265/75 is 2012rpm
rpm's at 70 with 3.9 and 265/75 is 2322rpm
rpm's at 70 with 3.9 and 33's is 2216rpm

3.9 and 33's are closer than 4.11 and 33's to stock gearing.
yes i know it's close but still not the same. a 1.045% difference.

I buy that. But for a normally aspirated engine? Especially THIS normally aspirated engine? Still don't hear those pigs warming up on the runway...:smilelol:

Nick - I sent my ECU to powerchip directly. The D2 is not a plug and play. You have to send them the ECU to have it soldered in and programmed. Check out their site and give them a call

Thanks, i didnt know you could just get it from them. This discussion and the seemingly reasonable price has gotten me interested in it some more so i thought I would see if i could shop around or if there was only on place to get them.
