I found a post in another thread, but I think the issue is different. I have a 5-speed 1996 Disco with 2" OME and 235/85's. I recently noticed a CLACKING sound when the vehicle is under load, or engaged in acceleration (ie takeoff): more diagnostic:

1. No noise on coasting
2. No noise on idle
3. Not Audible at higher speeds.
4. No discernible vibrations throughout vehicle, steering or braking

Help me narrow down this issue...

1. Check roof rack rails.

2. Check suspension

3. Check steering dampener for loose parts

4. Check lug nuts for looseness - retighten if necessary

5. Loose cats or exhaust related.

Let us know what you find.

I'll add one more to that... Check your driveshafts. Just grab ahold of them and shake. If there is any play, your u-joints are on their way out.

U joints and/or differential issues. more specifically the pinion or side carrier bearings. they can make this noise under load.
but as Cbass mentioned check those joints first. inspect them very good and all 4 cups on each joint as you spin the shaft. good time to grease them up if they appear in good shape.
