Which do you like and why ?? I'm starting to do my homework for purchase(hopefully) in the spring. Would like to get something around 2000 but nothing earlier than 95.

Holy Crap man, find an unmolested 95 classic and rub it with a diaper everynight in your climate controlled garage. Love that truck or I will love it while you are sleeping. Dont get a P38 (96-2002), mostly for their faulty electrical systems. they are nice to drive but a shitstorm if unproperly cared for by previous owners.

If you don't want earlier than 95, that limits you on the classic part. I like the classic myself, the timeless design and pure charm, and relative simplicity mechanically compared to later models with all the gizmo's does it for me.

My pockets will tell me what I'll be getting so I may end up with a later model. How long do the engine last ?? I've see most classic's with around 150,000 on them which doesn't scare me seeing how my current truck has 163,000 but it's a diesel. This is going to be my second family/play vehicle. Would like to stay in the 90's at least.

LRflip, garage ?? Wish I had one and if I did I'd probably have my landscaping equipment in it anyway

Your diesel is a baby with only 163K. I've seen classics with up over 200k. But, Ive never seen a p38 with that kind of mileage. what Im saying is, if you can find a classic with just about 100k on the clock, thats a good deal. If its going to be your extra/play vehicle, then shoot for a classic also. They are better offroad, more aftermarket accessories, relatively cheaper parts, some are even interchangeable with discovery parts.

I love both the RRC and the RR P38's.

RRC Pros
- Easy to work on
- Much cheaper parts and more used parts
- Timeless, "classic", and stately
- Not as much stuff to break

RR P38 Pros
- Drives better
- More modern
- Sexy
- More comfortable and luxurious
- Not as old

RRC Cons:
- Worse manners IMO
- Older car = more problems
- Hard to find a good one
- Expensive for a 1994/1995

RR P38 Cons
- Air Suspension coil spring conversion costs 3x as much
- Expensive Parts
- Strange Ergonomics
- Probably less reliable
- ANNOYING DINGER NOISE- IT SOUNDS LIKE A RADAR DETECTOR OR A DYING SPEAKER OR SOMETHING
- Hard to find a good one- it seems like many of them are high milage and not well taken care of- the case with most rovers

I'd go with a 1998/1999 P38 and a cheap 1991/1992 RRC- the best of both worlds

LC4Life, that's about 13k out of my budget. I'm going to go for a classic being that my funds will most likely be low. Hopeing to save up the coin over winter and pay cash. That's if the winter is a snowey one or I'll have to wait another year

If your budget is 5k I would avoid a P38, unless you get lucky most in your price range will be i need of lots of things.

The biggest drawback IMO of buying a Rover used is that a lot of people get in over their heads, here in Seattle the "job is your credit" used car lots have lots of P38s and Discos for around 10k, and people buy them because they get a lot of bling for their buck (1999 4.6 was a $70,000 car) but they simply can't afford to keep the truck in good running condition. They buy it and then ignore all the little things that go wrong.

I think on a 5k budget, P38 would be out of the question. (unless you have a large repair budget after the 5k purchase) But I do agree with EJB90 they are sexy. :D The P38's have a pretty bad rep around these parts, but they just take a bit more high tech wizardry for some repairs and that doesn't scare me. If you get a well cared for P38 it will take care of you, and those don't usually come for 5k.

I like the classic and new ones, P38 doesn't do a whole lot for me, but its just a personal thing. I think the big thing is the heritage of the classic, knowing it was what I consider the first SUV, makes it the coolest SUV.
