I have found some off the wall info on the D-web so I thought I would pass this along.

We previously hired people to clean our carpets at our house. We have a 5 yr. old so they are always getting spilled on, etc. Well, instead of forking out the $175-$200 to do it, I rented a carpet cleaner from Home Depot. It was the best money ever spent. We cleaned our whole house(2500'sq.) in just a couple of hours. End result was just as good as a professional job.

Rental was: $15 for 4 hrs (after 5pm til 9am qualifies for 4 hr. rental)
Gallon o' carpet cleaning solution: $10.00

It is easy and I would definately recommend doing it yourself! :D

After living with 3 mud collecting dogs and one cat that constantly was throwing up, I just ended up breaking down and buying one. Found that Resolve carpet cleaner got the best results for me when using the Resolve spay as well on really nasty spots or high traffic areas.

After having a dog, a four year old, an exhusband that worked in landscaping, and then myself with all my little projects....I just ripped the carpet up and went with the original hardwood. :D Using a broom or hardwood vacuum is quicker, easier, and cost less. Oh and weighs less!!!

Although IF you have carpet I agree that is DEFINITELY the best route to take! ;) :D

We got a Hoover Shampooer, it is great, but we just get Stanely Steamer to do it. They do a much better job than we could do, plus we can sit back and not worry about it.

Carpet is nasty, isn't it? Like cloth nailed on the floor. Sort of like not changing your socks for 5 years.

And my dog is always sitting on it... without any pants on!

This is why I use resolve and a Hoover carpet cleaner. I've found my Hoover actually works better at removing all the water than the rentals I've tried.

My entire downstairs is hardwood and tile. My bathrooms upstairs are tile. Tile is great and not too hard to intall.

I bought a 'Rug Doctor' because I had 2 Afghan Hounds and a Benji mutt, 3 cats, and a back yard that floods every time it rains, so a lot of mud comes inside...
and.....
1) i got fed up with bringing in the 'steam clean' guys, listening through their sales patter to get me to buy extra services I did not need or want, or those special sprays they push to remove stains.
2) running to Home Depot to rent every week was a pain.
3) works great on LR interiors as well!
Its paid for itself many times over...

WOW Kai, Kim got lucky this weekend! LOL :p

We have the Hoover carpet cleaner as well and I love it. I try to do our carpet every month to TRY to keep it up. Yes, I know that is bad on your carpet but ..... it makes me feel better about all the junk being stored in the carpet.

I cannot stand carpet but at least, we had most the house redone to tile - thanks to some of the guys in the HLRC. :) :) :)

Carpet in the bedrooms (no radiant underfloor heating unfortunately :( ) but 24" turkish travertine everywhere else. With socks makes a great run-and-slide.

I went ahead and got the whole package deal, the dish washer, washing machine, vacuum, carpet cleaner, cook, duster, and once every three months, sex machine. Now if I could only keep her away from the check book!!!

I agree though, hardwood and tile is great. We put in a hardwood hallway that leads from the garage to the kitchen and then to the bed rooms. It's so much better!!! And just today, I had a guy come in to get me a price on tiling my kitchen back splash, and two bathroom floors.

I was told by a carpet cleaner, that soap and carpet cleaning stuff that's left in the carpet actually attracts more dirt afterwards, so if you plan to purchase a carpet cleaner - don't overdo it with the soap.
