I'm trying to clean out the sensors in my MAF-1996 D1...How do I remove the sensor without without braking the MAF-doesn't seem to be a way to remove the part I need to clean. Can I just clean it as is, and spray the sensor with MAF cleaner through the little hole? Will this be as effective?
Thank you!

yea you are supposed to spray it while the unit is whole. Some people have success cleaning the maf, most dont. Try running the truck. While its stumbling, disconnect the maf (while the truck is running) does it stop stumbling? Is your check engine light on?

...glad I didn't tear it apart. I sprayed the sensor through the little hole, and it appears the truck is running even worse than before. Maybe it just didn't have time to completely dry? Not sure, but it is much worse. No check/service engine lights...
I will try and run the truck with the MAF disconnected, but it only stumbles when I am decelerating to a stop, in neutral. Although now it appears to do it at slower speeds and while I am accelerating.
Should I drive it with the MAF disconnected? I will have to check tomorrow morning before work.
Thank you for your help...don't want to lose the Rover

just make sure the maf is not hot or even warm, fresh outta the Rover oven, when spraying the sensor wires. The rapid cooling when sprayed can damage the thin wires fragile connection points.

My 2 cents, on my 2001 D2 I had the MAF throwing in a code every so often lately. Would take it out together with with its housing (the torx screws rotted so I did not bother to drill them out), spray the MAF Cleaning Spray like mad at it, it would get back to normal, code would clear.... for a while... until I mash the accelerator again on a highway somewhere. Then it would pop the code again. read somewhere that these sensors last for about 80K normally and my truck has approached 100K. So, handed $270 to the local stealer, bought a brand new part. Installed it and had no issues since.
